German Early war S Boat 1/72 scale by Airfix

Looks great. You’re right about the “coil or line” and have wiped it away well.

this gun has tractor like seats in PE.

the gun base prior to the scratch supports being made.

here they are simple gussets in place to support the base overhang.

Thank you Uncle heavy, Ejector pins the bane of old kits, they could have placed them underneath where they would place them today, Kit History Ay, I’ll get some mr surfacer on them

Not only on old kits … been there, done that …

I would suggest using the back edge of a nr 11 scalpel blade to scrpe off the edges of those ejector marks first and then take care of the resulting scratches with Mr Surface or similar product.

For future reference:
Sometimes I have used fine grit sandpaper, grit 180 or higher, glued to the end of a piece of sprue. Cut of a small piece of sandpaper, cut the sprue at 90 degree angle or slightly angled depending on how it is possible to reach a difficult spot, file the cut surface smooth, glue (epoxi or CA) the sanpaper to the end of the sprue, let harden, trim off the worst excess and go sanding. This method will probably not work in that tight space so scraping with the back edge of a nr 11 is better.

here’s another area for comment, the airfix kit has swapped out these daft X for Balkencross, much better, we all know the issue with swastikas in kits

and here is another incorrect detail in this kit, one door, there should be one on either side of the helm cabin, so I’m outlining one with pe to recreate one in look only.

and here’s the pva wheelhouse window glass going in

Trial fit of the wheel house and the torpedo assembly.

I remade the roof handrail from stretched sprue, as the kit one was broken and badly
formed, I used the original mounting points and simply trimmed off the bar.

Depth charges next.

Of course I say Depth charges, they can’t be magnetic mines, wrong shape and no sinkers.

the oversized kit release mechanism bar replaced with stretched sprue. and scratch made crank release handles. Just needs the spare length snipped of.

Great Little ships do Mines with sinkers, Torpedos, Depth charges and machine guns for the Vosper, but a lot of adjustments will need to be made.

the sinker units for the mines are made from PE and cast pieces, they are small models in their own right.

Really nice build up through the stages… An old kit but you injected a new lease of life into it so far with some clever thinking and simple spare left over parts … Really good showcase of how to to do it …:+1:

Thanks John, it’s been a pleasure.

I ordered the glass for this on day one and I’ve assembled the panes using Gorilla clear glue.

I’ve chosen a dark blue card for the base

The rigging crosses or x 's made from styrene sheet or plasticard, and some optional one’s made from brass sprue PE Frames. The PE one’s look more scale thickness.

I made a scratchbuilt wooden stand from timber off a Cherry tree that blew down in Storm Eunice, it looks the part and holds the model steady.

I used the kit stands as templates to get the correct profile of the keel.

Fitting the model inside the glass case is always a test of how well I’d measured things beforehand, room enough for the rigging and the length of the hull
