Group Build Description: Any genre, any subject, any scale, where a vehicle is towing a trailer, artillery piece or another vehicle.
Picking up on a group build idea that several guys stated they were interested in.
The intent here is that the two main subjects are connected by a hitch mechanism, hook or cable. Examples:
Artillery tractor and field piece
Tank transporter and trailer (a vehicle does not have to be on the trailer)
Tow truck (not flat bed type truck) and automobile
Tow aircraft and glider (connected by tow lines)
Helicopter with underslung load
Tugboat and scow,
Etc.
Military or civilian is fine. The two components must be distinctly hitched together and able to move independently from the main vehicle and not connected by any other means. (I.e. a car tied down on a flat bed truck or a gun portee or a Mistal aircraft combo are not within the build intent as the secondary aspect has no independent movement whist connected to the main aspect.)
Builds must be done solely for this group build to be eligible for the completion award ( except in the case where a Third component is involved, I.e. a tank being transported on the trailer and tractor combo and which was built for another campaign can be added to the final complete build).
Pictures of the unbuilt kit contents are required. Part started (no more than 20% built) can be entered as long as pictures showing the current state are posted.
Event Details: (Remember to click “Going” if you want to join the build!) 2024-12-31T14:00:00Z→2025-12-30T14:00:00Z
Completion Award: To be determined
A Note about Awards: The following text is a reminder that in order for people participating and finishing their projects to receive a badge on their forum profile, they will need to provide their account username to the group build leader by the completion date of the build. The leader will then provide this list to the site admin who will bulk award the badges to those users who have finished the group build. If you don’t provide your username or finish the project on the timetable the leader has setup you will not be able to receive an award.
Got a few tank transporters tractor/trailer combos that will fit the bill plus some other truck/trailer combos, even a Kaelble Z6R with Culemeyer 80ton trailer.
Interesting! But it depends on me building both ends of the combo in the timeframe, where adding a trailer to an existing model (finished or still a part-bake) would be easier…
A few questions:
Does the motive power have to be mechanical, or are men and beasts acceptable?
Must the connection be flexible or is a rigid link O.K.?
Must the direction the motive power is applied be a “pull” or is “push” permissible?
I’m thinking of a Corellian YT-1300 light freighter pushing a cargo module, and wondering if a Cyberman pulling a scrap Dalek on a four-wheeled station trolly would be acceptable while a Cyberman pushing a junked Dalek in a wheelbarrow would not…
I had originally proposed this build on the campaign suggestion thread, and at the time I mentioned horse and cart, so yes, beasts like the pic above would be fine, or oxen pulling (they are technically actually pushing) a cart, etc.
Anything connected only by hand, ie the wheelbarrow you mentioned, or a gun crew manhandling a field piece is not within the intent, however if the gun crew are using rope and harness around their body to pull the field piece up a hill, then that fits the bill.
Rigid tow bars usually allow some in dependent movement sideways, to allow the towed item to be steered around corners, so they are acceptable too.
If someone wants to do a sci-fi combo, with some clear rod or something depicting a tractor beam, that is also within the intent. As long as the model components are physically attached.
Just to clear it up, not that I intend to do one as it would take longer than the campaign window, but would a tugboat towing/guiding a large ship or a destroyer towing another crippled destroyer or cruiser be allowed?
Think HMAS Vendetta being towed from Singapore to Fremantle by 3 separate destroyers including HMAS Yarra, after the Japanese invaded.
This is an awesome thread! Where else can you see a Stuka being classed as a trailer? Or the idea of a Cyberman towing a Dalek? This is shaping up to be a lot of fun!
Well, while that might satisfy the technical requirement it would entirely fail to convey the sentimental bond between the Ogre and his Duck thus robbing the piece of it’s emotional impact. I have a 1/700th scale Tug Boat, I may as well have that towing a giant Rubber Duck…
The horses are attached to the pole and yoke with straps called traces. The animal has a degree of free movement as a result. Any carriage, sulky, etc allows independent movement.
Yes, tying the rope into a harness around the ogre is fine. It also leaves his hands free to hold the shampoo and bath towel….
Grond is essentially a log with a giant wolf head. The vehicle for Grond is a giant siege ram carrier cart. A Sulok is just a really large Aurochs.
Wolf heads and logs are easy to source. Scratch building the carrier using plastic or wood would take a few days of work. Aurochs sculpts for 3D printing are out there and easily scaled as needed. Someone with a 3D printer and scratch building skills could pull it off for maybe $40 US?
Building a diorama of Grond approaching the gates of Minas Tirith would require a far more serious effort. The gates are something like 5 stories tall. The walls are based on those around Constantinople and perhaps 30 feet thick. The gatehouse and towers would rise another few stories above the gate. A hoard of orcs, ogres, goblins, and wargs would swarm around the ram, protected by mobile shield walls. It would take a thousand figures and tons of scratch building to make it convincing.
For bonus points, include a regiment of Rohirrim heavy cavalry charging into the flank of the siege force.
