This stuff that comes in a bottle. I picked some up accidentally awhile back thinking that it was a larger version of their enamel Matt Cote stuff, my preferred matt coat. Does anybody here use this stuff, and if so what do you use to thin it and in what ratio?
The sticker looks like it has many layers. Some medication bottles have that kind of sticker,
supposed to be peeled back to read the legal information about side effects etc.
Have you tried peeling back the sticker?
I have never seen this varnish before so I can’t answer the actual question.
Edge of sticker is pushed out by the multiple thin layers of paper.
Text in multiple layers, looks like some latin language
Sounds like a standard Acrylic Matt coat product. I have never used it though.
The product description on a seller’s website.
I used it once, it dried leaving chalky white blotches. Shook it up as much as I could so I don’t know what caused it. Have heard many stories of similar experiences.
Test it on some scrap first before.
I’ll follow this thread in case there’s a solution to this problem.
Yes i did. All that was there on the inner label was the stuff in multiple languages that were not English.
Yes I tried that and looking up YouTube videos… nothing on the flat varnish stuff ![]()
I recall somebody posting that sort of thing on another forum awhile back. That’s when I realized I had the acrylic and not the enamel. I guess it’s time for a paint test mule. At the very least I can try thinning with water and some other acrylic brand thinners. If I can get a hold of some Humbrol acrylic thinner, I’d be quite happy to try thinning with that as well.
Could you take a photo and post it here?
Maybe someone else can read those foreign lingos …
I can do French and German and probably also decipher Spanish and Italian.
I read ‘con agua’ through the outer layer so I think there is one more page
That’s it pulled out to max extension… somehow I doubt that Humbrol gave more complete directions compared to English… ![]()
As Thomas Dolby sang, “SCIENCE!!!”
Excellent product for making surfaces with fresh frost on them.
Not what I would call a clear varnish …
Yeah, that’s what I got. So even thinning didn’t help?
Well, the good news is we have a product that can make a good white wash on a winter cammo tank.

You can clearly see on the last pic, that there is more text, shining through, so you must unfold it another way to get to it…
Yes, the stuff showing through is the stuff on the outer surface of the label before it is peeled open.
Thinning at a 1:1 ratio was not effective. I next mixed up a ratio of 1 part varnish to 3 parts thinner. A single coat barely toned down shine, while a second coat before fully dried gave a hint of frosting.
Next attempt will be a ratio of 2 parts thinner to 1 part varnish…
It’s tricky stuff.
Wonder if Gunze acrylic thinner would help (or maybe just turn it to goo?)? I’ve got a bottle of the Mr Thinner and the Aqueous thinner in the light blue bottle. If I get a chance I’ll experiment with a drop.
I used Vallejo’s Matt varnish on that Hurricane I was doing and it worked really. Even brushed it, just a little of Vallejo’s airbrush thinner was needed. Very happy with it.
Google translate says that the Hungarian text means this in English (despite me not typing all the diacritical marks correctly):
Humbrol Paint is a water-soluble, spreadable material with a gloss, matt or satin finish, which can be used to prepare painted surfaces for decals, as a varnish to improve the appearance of clean parts. Apply thinly, allowing 30 minutes for drying before applying a new coat. Apply multiple coats for a higher level of finish. Wash brushes with water. For further information visit www.humbol.com. Take care to avoid contact with skin or eyes. Skin contact: Wash thoroughly with soap and water. Eye contact: Remove contact lenses, rinse eyelids with plenty of clean fresh water for at least 10 minutes. Keep out of reach of children.
Water soluble: maybe it doesn’t like the acrylic thinners?
Worth a shot.
