Nor do you have the slightest idea of what my experiences have been. Yet, you choose to vent your frustration and spleen with an ad hominum attack. Subjects I know? You have no idea, either. I was trying to be encouraging, and there are too many so called doctors who will tell someone to ā€œlive with your pain.ā€ I, too, must avoid NSAIDS, live with chronic pain, and am supposed to be dead three times over. It has not made me a bitter, sour old man, like you.

Enjoy your suffering, it seems to be all you have left.

I am 70.5 years old. Partial hearing in right ear. I use reading glasses since I was 45 years old. Had catarac surgery in left eye 10 years ago. Right eye may need the surgery down the road. Saw eye doc and my vision is 20 - 25 with no eye damage internally (I am type 2 Diabetic). For detail work i use optvisor with built in light. Biggest problem is sciatica issue on left side that at times brings me to tears when I stand or walk. Do not build much these days but keep adding to my stash. VBG. Hands at times drop parts. Can not grip stuff as well as I used to. Oh yeah arthritist in lower back. But I try to walk 2000 to 4000 steps a day. Lately I added weight (10 pds.) so that may add to my issues. Hey getting old is no picnic but it is a lot better than being dead!

I agree , deadlifts are probably the best overall body strengthening exercises. I credit my weightlifting for helping me with ruck marches with heavy loads, wearing body armor, and other things associated with being in the infantry and military in general. I never fell out of a march or run, but I could have used more cardio. When I was working out regularly, my back problems usually went away. Together with core strength, which for me is now non existent, was a huge help in keeping fit. My eating habits donā€™t help either. I have no excuse because I have two Olympic weightlifting sets and benches in my basement with a kick ass stereo system! But right across from that is my modeling desk which is always calling out to me!

Model first, weightlift after. Use at least the same amount of time for the weightlifting that you used for the model building.
The muscles adapt to the heavy weights so handling tiny plastic parts after lifting heavy stuff gets complicated.

Iā€™m sure pumping ironā€™s a good thing, but for someone like me who looks like Charles Atlas when he had sand kicked in his face a gym would be just embarrassing. I was the guy who opted for cross-country running as a sport at school & ended up at a mateā€™s house half way round the suburban course smoking cigarettes.

But needs must, I cycled over 10K miles going to work in central London over 8 years in the ā€˜80ā€™s. When I got pneumonia in 2004 the specialist asked me (on the basis of a lung-function test) what elite sport Iā€™d done, given my lung capacity was 33% greater than my height/weight ratio predicted. I was still smoking by the way. I laughed & coughed simultaneously.

Now 3 years free of ciggies, last month my son invited me to ride with him around a local lake ā€“ he didnā€™t tell me it was a 18 mile circuit. OK it took over 3 hours including a break for lunch, but I made it ā€“ just ā€“ and still kicking. My point is cyclingā€™s a more interesting & non-weight-bearing alternative for keeping semi-fit.

With the Optivisor, I can see the smaller stuff very well, just seems like I constantly need more and more light to illuminate what Iā€™m working on. I mounted a really bright LED on it and thatā€™s helped tremendously. Handling tiny parts has definitely become an issue, reckon I should get the tweezers that stay closed. I used to think 70 was ancient, but now that Iā€™m here, it doesnā€™t seem like it.

I definitely should have done more cardio - besides running- like cycling. It would have benefited me for sure. With bad knees (osteoarthritis) cycling would be much less impact but still great for the heart. I need to stop eating so much crap- but Iā€™ll NEVER give up my beer!

Iā€™ve never been into New Yearā€™s resolutions but this might be a good time to start. You make a good point Uncle.

Absolutely beer is the final straw ā€“ well, decent beer anyway. That was my position too, until I was told I was yeast-intolerant 18 months ago. Soā€¦no more bread? No more beer? Apparently. So I gave up beer - but, being a fast thinker, a month ago I decided to chance it again (for afficionados, it was a Bentspoke Crankshaft ale local to Canberra, Australia) and guess what? a) I loved it b) I didnā€™t die c) specialist, shove it.

I own a set of dumbbells, the type which is a metal bar that you hang weights on.
I think each weighs 17 pounds. They are collecting dust, I need to start using them again.
Anyhow, I tried modeling after 30 minutes of working with them.
My hands went everywhere so precision movements were not my thing right then ā€¦
It was OK after an hour or so. Lesson learned.
