I Think We Were Talking about the Possibility of this a Few Weeks Back - Takom T28 Coming

Interesting… I cribbed this image from a post on FB, so I can’t verify the source or credibility. However…

Hell, somebody had to do it. Representatives from three different companies including me were at Benning in 2024 measuring the damned thing…

Yay! Good thing y’all convinced me to wait!
I hope it comes out before 2027, but probably not…
I also hope we get workable tracks, but, that’s also a probably not, haha
Wondering how accurate it will be compared to Dragon’s
Seems like way too much space between the tracks…

I knew this was coming, that’s why I told you to wait. It should be out this year. And it will be accurate.

FWIW, the gap between the tracks actually appears to be pretty correct. The over-width of the tracks that Dragon chose to use (copies of its existing Sherman tank kit tracks) were the major reason why so many other dimensions and shapes were in error.

I suspect, knowing a little about some of the guys working with Takom in surveying prototypes at Benning for future kits, that this version will be much more correct than the DML kit. It may not be perfect. (What kit is?) However, I have a lot of confidence that the really important stuff will be right.

As Vader would have said, “I sense a disturbance in my bank account…”

Here’s a good shot of the track gap.

It is definitely a real post and the kit is definitely happening.

Check the timing of last year’s T58 announcement. I don’t remember when (or if) the silhouette came out but the full announcement was in March and it was released by early May. I expect this will be to a similar schedule.

Always found the story to be a bit funny about this when it comes to the discovery part. The last surviving prototype and was just found in a field hiding in the bushes and no one knows where it was for the previous 27 years. That must have been one hell’va military accountability formation the day the tank was “misplaced”

I took almost the exact photo. Well, that and an assload of measurements.

It really wasn’t as mysterious as the stories make it out to be. One vehicle was turned over to the Engineer board for testing of bridges and transporters. At that point it was written off as disposed, like a tank used as a range target, so there wasn’t any need for accountability. It was used that way into the 1950s, IIRC, then parked in an out of the way spot at Fort Belvoir. It’s presence was known but not by people who would’ve considered it significant. For example, my brother-in-law was at a training class at Belvoir in 1970-ish and walked around the building during a break and was surprised by “the biggest f-ing tank I ever saw” parked in the lot behind it. He wasn’t interested in tanks, so he knew nothing about it and didn’t give it a second thought. If it had been easier to move and/or in a spot that was needed for something else, it probably would have been scrapped.

It’s like one of those stories about some stone with a date carved in it used to hold up a porch post at a tavern. Thousands of people walked past for decades, then one day they decide to put in a handicap ramp and dig it out to find it’s the original grave marker of one of our presidents, “missing” since 1862.

Dozens of projects, the last of which was the ACV. Never used them. Of course people can blame inaccuracies on that. That said, I’ve never helped with any Black Label kits.

If you’re building it with the outer tracks in place, you can skip the top runs. That’s usually about a third less track to build. With the outer tracks being towed behind the vehicle, you will need to include the top runs on the vehicle itself but again, those on the separate track units will be out of sight, so a saving of one-sixth or so.
