That first article explains in depth what I said twenty two posts up. Even talks about the myth of standoff armor.
Are the Strykers still using the slat armor these days? If it works, we will see a re appearance. Especially on more likely to get in a fight. Like the old ACAV TC shields made a comeback in Iraq on M113s after being rarely seen for decades.
The Russians are using them on the rear of some tanks- the only ones I’ve seen in Ukraine are on the T-80BVM. The T-90MS (not seen in Ukraine yet) has them too- in both types on the rear 1/4 of the hull and turret.
Have to amend what I said here after seeing a few excellent pictures from @Frenchy showing a T-72B3M with the slats on the rear 1/4 of the hull and turret.
Can any of that steel be recycled?? Lol
It sure can, as long as it isn’t contaminated by depleted uranium rounds (some APFSDS projectiles,
don’t know if Russia uses such rounds but I mention it just to be on the safe side).
If Ukraine survises this Russian invasion they can make a fortune from selling scrap iron …
NLAW’s or InLAWS: they can wreck your day …
Looking at those roof racks covered in luggage, I can’t help but see absolutely perfect targets for civilians in apartment blocks tossing Molotov cocktails. All that stuff on fire right above your turret hatches cannot be good for the crew or the tank.
Well, that’s a Nokia cell phone. It MIGHT just work against Javelins!
Damon.
Whatever this tank had… it didn’t work…
Catastrophic kill
It’s war and the Russians are the bad guys… but watching that tank burn like that is still hard to watch.
If I may shift the focus a tiny amount, I would like to draw our attention to a remarkable new development:
You saw it here first, “Cope Cage” is a formal term for these screens.
It may inspire confidence in some but it doesn’t seem as if those cages have been able to cope …
Not for me. My first assigned job in a line unit was TOW gunner back when the T-72 was the invincible boogeyman, and the Red hordes were on the other side of the curtain. That’s what I was trained to do, and seeing it happen for real to Russians invading another country puts a smile on the old 11H still inside me somewhere.
For more information on the cope cage look for the time stamp in the second half of the Micro Machines Podcast.
I was an 05H, I spent two years in West Germany listening to the bear. I don’t mind anyone who takes pride in a job well done, I’m just imagining those guys becoming crispy critters. Did they know they were going to war? Or were they conscripts who thought they were on a training exercise? Putin is a madman who has invaded a sovereign nation with zero (real) excuses to do so. His forces are killing civilians and bombing hospitals. Doesn’t mean those guys in that tank were actually evil.
No, but they were in another country with hostile intent and lawful military targets. They were probably killed instantly in the initial detonation and likely had a mercifully swift death. I feel for the conscripts and their parents. The “professionals” get no such empathy from me.
