I do like the increasing number of field kitchen kits now available which covers a range of combatant nations. I think these types of kits are great to mix and match with others in building larger or ‘busier’ dioramas.

I do have an issue with the chef’s hat presented as likely being worn in the field (granted this could be in a mess or in the field given the range of figures and equipment provided).

I know the most recently released kit from ICM of a German WW2 field kitchen had some comments about whether a chef’s hat would be seen in that space, with someone finding a supporting photo that it would. So, yes it has been seen in the German context at least once but not widely apart from that.

A chef’s hat in most WW2 context would not be used widely and even that usage was generally depending on ranks being served (officer’s mess probably, senior NCO mess likely, junior NCO mess probably not and OR mess almost certainly not).

Most work in the field or a small mess would see the use of side caps, skull caps or baseball caps. Unless of course the ‘fitter and turner’ (fit s**t in a pot and turn it into a meal = chef/cook/ catering staff) is trying to appear more professional to distract from the food.

Apart from that I would also like to see more in this kit, such as supporting equipment/provisions which could include various foodstuffs, a standalone chopping block, racks for an oven with meat on or trays with loaves of bread (depending on whether you want a field bakery or kitchen) of some sort. There’s some items available from other suppliers such as Miniart who have a wide range of foods which could be used with the figures offered here, but it would be nice to have it in one package.

These are a nice start. Would like to see more US sets.

And, of course, a pointing guy.

I’d like to see Mermites and mess kits in 1/35 styrene. Then you could portray US troops n a non-combat situation, having chow in the field.

It’s similar to the Green Beret. A chef’s hat is something you earn. If you have a right to wear it, it’s yours to wear. I would imagine it’s also like the Cavalry Stetson worn with your field uniform, as Robert Duvall famously wore it in Apocalypse Now. When I was a Drill Sergeant it was not authorized in 670-1, but very few people had the stones to challenge its wearer.

As it is still in progress, I hope ICM are reading the comments and will add to the set accordingly before it is released. A full set to fill a CCKW needs three stoves, as well as garbage cans, water cans, and ice box, not to mention lots of other little stuff.

Legend does make mermites in resin. Anyone ever notice that Ward Cleaver had one in his garage?

Don’t forget the G7117 field kitchen truck …

Add a spatula on his “pointing” hand and a pan on the stove. I can already smell the Army Noodles with Ketchup.
