Land of the rising sun

Usually I hear the term “app” in connection with a telephone. Are you using a phone to operate the Cricut? i would much prefer to use the confuser with a big screen & a real keyboard. Will the “app” work with an iMac?

Your numbers inside the red circle did come out well.

Yeah sorry, there is an iPhone app. But you can get the same app from the App Store on your iMac/apple laptop as well. I actually much prefer the desktop version of the app but I often use my phone for simplicity as I don’t have a computer in the hobby room and I’m too lazy sometimes to grab my laptop. I’ll often design masks on my computer as I like the dexterity afforded by the mouse and keyboard better and then use my phone in the hobby room to send the data to my cricut to print/cut

I have the cricut joy, it’s the smallest one at around $130 and it has definitely saved me that and more on decals. I ruined the kit insignia on a Me-262 and cut the decals out, on an archer build the decals were far too thick so I cut my own. My mom has the larger cricut maker which has more options, but I’ve found the Joy to be plenty for my applications

The only caveat is that whatever you use must have Bluetooth at least for the Joy, I think, though I would need to confirm that the larger ones plug into the computer via a usb

Put some Semi-Gloss Black on the gun receiver to see is the tiny gap on the top between the receiver halves shows. Looks like it needs some putty. There also might be a gap at the front of the receiver.

I regret gluing the recuperators to the receiver as there’s not much clearance to paint the receiver black and the recuperator grey. I’ll paint them first on the other two guns.

Thanks for this info. I have heard of these machines but really could not understand what they do. I see they can cut stencils, that is certainly useful. They cut decals as well? Are these the water slide kind or rub on or something else? I have often wished I could design decals in Illustrator and somehow make decals from the designs.

Paul

They only cut stencils, but I use those in place of pretty much every large decal. Anything bigger than about a tank balkencruez gets sprayed

looking good bill. waiting to see how you do the white edge of the hinumaru. i used rlm 04 frr the wtng id bands. looks about right.

joe.

Yes I would be interested in the masking too, especially how i would make a circle without a cricut.

Joe

better yet do to the craft stoor and buy a large sheet of colored construction paper. lay it length wise off the table and prop it up behind the model so you get one continuous backdrop that gives you depth of field. nice build. i need to get my courage up to attempt a ship build. what color paint did you use for the deck and did and how did you weather it?

Joe

Thank you! The white ring is already on there. I did the marking in this order

  1. Sprayed a coat of Mr surfacer 1500 black to get an even smooth starting point
  2. Spray tamiya sky gray as getting good coverage of white, yellow or red over black is a nightmare
  3. Sprayed the white in a large area over the black
  4. Let cure 24 hrs
  5. Masked the parts I wanted to keep white, which were the hinumaru edges and the 33’s inside them
  6. Sprayed the red and the masked the center after 24 hrs

Step 5 can be seen here with the dark blue/black masks, masking off the white edge

Bomber,

Meng has come out with one now. Exceptionally overpriced IMO considering the options out there.

Hobby Circle Cutter Meng Model -MTS037 (super-hobby.com)

I have one from Shadow Hobby (purchased many moons ago so they’ve since upgraded it a bit):

Shadow Hobby |TLCC-000 Thinnerline Circle Cutter

This thing is a FANTASTIC must-have, especially if you do models with tires and rims that are molded together. The roadwheel in the picture is from a Tamiya M577.

HTH,

Mike

Circle can also be cut with an old fashioned protractor and a needle, though then you have a hole in the center of the mask and the edge can be a bit jagged

If you don’t want a step less cutter, you are better off with a simple cheap circle cutter than a protractor. Same theory, you can use the centre disc to stop the pin hole and no ragged edge - just a limit on how small you can go.

A little more progress on the gun mount.

I like the idea of a circle cutter. I see you are using a tannish paper as a stencil. does it have a tacky side? What is it called and where do you get it?

that may be the way to go for me. the hole in the middle is not a big deal, just put a piece of tape over it. also instead of a pin order a replacement pack of blades for the circle cutter and use them in the protractor. but petbat
s suggestion i think is most practical since it is set up already. how small a circle can it make?

It depends on the brand, but usually around 10mm Diameter. Any smaller and it would be hard to control. A rotary hole punch is usually good enough for most smaller sizes up to about 5 mm. Put a strip of tape on some plastic card, punch the hole, then peel it off the disk.

Hey fellow modelers,
It’s time I’ve caught up with everyone’s incredible works.
Gary_Kato /Looking good. Extreme amount of detail on that AA gun kit.
Mead93 /I like the unusual markings on it. Great masking job.
steviecee /Wonderful job on that small scale ship. The Shioya turned out great.
Predator /Wonderful Divine Wind display. 3D printing is fascinating. Love the splashes.
TacFireGuru / They make a tool for everything nowadays. Thanks for sharing.

Update time for my Banzai Charge build.

All the figures are done. I’ve started on the Fujimi 1/76 Chi-Ha tank. I’ll show the progress on that in the next update. Thanks for viewing.
