Let's see your Workbench

Some of the best modelers I know, have large desks areas, but only manage to confined themselves to 12x12in areas with tools, card, paints, and projects, all round them.

True that, the bigger bench for me isn’t actually work space, its to spread out, maybe another project, but yes the actual soace that you work in is small.

That’s not even close to the mess usually on my bench. lately it has gotten worse to the point i can’t find the parts to the model i’m building right in front of me. it has made me take on a reorganizing project, just can’t find the right tool storage system. nothing i find on amazon feels right.

Now I understand what I miss in my workshop: a fridge with beer and a coffee machine (depending on the time of day)!

I get that. Might have to make your own that works for you.

My whole work bench area as been turned upside down and packed away because we are installing new floors. Going to take away to put it all back together again. Maybe it will stay neater and not give Matt and my wife anxiety looking at it……but I doubt it, that’s not how the my creative juices work.

Now Ryan, there’s a place for everything, and everything in it’s place …

Been a while since I posted, not a lot of modeling has happened, but a lot of supporting modeling projects have gone on, among other things

Over the winter I decided on a basement reorganization. I had switched from oil heat to a heat pump ($500/yr savings), and with the tank gone I partitioned off a storage room that could fit most of what was scattered around on now obsolete work benches. With the storage room complete and unneeded work benches gone, I expanded the hobby area around the corner, framing and sheathing a wall to add more storage and a 3D printing station,

I changed my brush organization soon after. I had one of those square plastic things with a number of holes for brushes that wasn’t convenient to use. I made this vertical stack of angled holders to better sort my brushes. I went with vertical so I’d have enough room to expand with another set of paint racks which will probably happen soon,

Similarly redesigned my tool storage. I had some plastic holder that was cheaply made with loose plastic sleeves that came out with the tool, wasn’t all that big, or really useful. Now I have a bunch of bays that house like tools in easy reach,

I wanted my paper towels in reach instead of having to stand up to get them, so I came up with this high tech solution, 3/4" pipe and pine,

One thing I learned from building my 1/350 dreadnought was that it made for awkward handling and painting in my current space. I came up with a design for a mobile ship modeling bench that can handle anything from large scale wood to plastic. Just the other day I finished the top, and I’m getting ready to outfit it in support of my upcoming 1/64 Niagara build. Drawers will likely be done next month, I’m dreading the amount I’ll need to spend on slides so I’ve been putting it off.

The top to it isn’t actually all that level. Might have gotten a little too happy with the belt sander, but it’ll do.

Instead of metal sliders go for hard wood sliders and groves in draw sides . Rub a bar of soap on them, Probably last longer then rollers, in my experience.

But those soft close slides are just so nice. I’m gonna have to shop around before I make any decisions.

Wow James you had quite the setup before, now it’s a luxury modeling suite! Very nice work on everything; obviously your craftsmanship talents extend way beyond model building. It’s great that you have everything within reach like that.
