Lifting the Fog of War: Command and Control

Coming along nicely John. I assembled the tracks before priming with the usual mr surfacer 1500 black. I used Mr cement deluxe to assemble, which is thick enough to stay where you put it and leave the tracks fully workable.

They are a lot of work but the results are well worth it. Just remember those pins are different on each side, something I realised just in time!

Next comes suspension and tracks. TAKOM provides two jigs for assembling the tracks. Since the rubber band tracks don´t interlink, these are a great help.

I know I have given indi track links a hard time, and even more so ones with multiple parts… But … I am about to eat some tasty humble pie…these RFM ones are a dream.

3 parts per link, but the jig speeds the process right up.

That’s one run done. The jig and the start of the next run are laid out next to the completed side

I have been assembling runs of between 10 to 12, then cutting the next lot from the sprue. No clean up required, I just bought 2 new side cutters for £7 and they are super sharp and leave nothing but a clean edge. You can’t go wrong for 2 for 7 quid, even if they only last 4 months it’s still a bargain. Also I used AK extra thin glue for the assembly.

Close up of a section on the completed track run, and the 3 parts and the jig.

Very impressed with the links, the whole run and each complete link is fully articulated…

Excellent work John. See, indy links aren’t so evil after all.

Not all indy links are created equally.

These look to be a good set. :+1:

Finished installing the tracks on M-114. Was little trickier than John`s build.

Oh wholeheartedly agree Ryan! I steer clear of the ones with 6 or 8 parts per link! Just not enough days in the week for those.

I think 3 parts per link would be my limit… And you get plenty of detail on them.
@HermannB that looks very good and I liked the jig so it allows you to do a complete run of tracks with sprocket and idler in situ. It looks a great little kit :+1:

Don’t get the AFV Club LVT 4 Tracks then… 5 parts per link set, but you actually have to juggle in another thin link into the assembly as the parts with pins go into a hole in each, then into the paddle link. Then there is flash to remove, every hole needs to be enlarged, and the smaller square part has to be clicked in place without allowing it all to fall apart.

72 paddle links per side. 360 pieces per side…

I had to make my own jig to build them. When I get the pins in place one side, I use an alligator clip to hold them, while I jiggle the other side in place…

One run done, and that is several weeks of a bit at a time, as it is very tedious and time consuming. I decided to do the tracks before I started the kit…

Yeap… That’s never happening with this Callsign lol

Talking about tracks, I now have both runs done and sat at the side ready to be primed.
95 % of the hull is done. It’s really just fiddly little bits like lights, straight bar, side plates that need to be added.
I did notice something earlier which I will need to address. On Nomad, it has the spacers for the add on frontal armour which sit just behind the headlight’s and there are also 4 extra bolt on points that I need to add - should be fairly simple, so no major headaches really.

Started on the turret.

Also put some of the fittings on as well.

I’m not overly impressed with the need for a 5 part turret. I am sure that could of been simplified. It went together ok, but although there are obvious spaces on the real one in the same areas as the kit, I am going to need to apply some Mr surfacer 500 and sand back a few places.

All in all it wasn’t to bad so I shouldn’t gripe to much.

I just went through my stash and discovered that I have Volkswagen T3 van leftover from Takoms combo kit.

Ths version, known as Funkbus is a run-of-the mill command post. There is a conversion kit from PSM that make something unusual out of a common van kit.

Images are from PSM.
Another complimentary model could be the T3 DoKa Feldkabelbautrupp. (Telephonecable Layer)

Hermann those are both really unique vehicle options. Are you going to pull the trigger on one?

I think I go with the van option as soon as may wallet allows it. The pick-up might be problematic since it´s OOP.

I just started googling since Takom doesn`t provide any information about painting the interior. But I think they took the vans out of the production line and simply painted them Gelboliv and later BronzegrĂźn.

Just found a review on the Funkbus conversion.

Looks like a winner to me. I think I will get me one.
