Purpose unknown, but definitely holes.
Some of the TMs mention drain holes, with or without plugs, in the trails and top and bottom carriages.

They seem high for drain holes. But I looked at my walk-around photos of 4 different guns and all have the same holes. I think you are safe to break out the pin vise.
Thank you all - bronze and holes it is!

Now here’s what I painted the rails: Gold + Matt Black, instead of what Revell calls Bronze. They’re painted on top and underneath, too. Acceptable?
I think it has to do with the internal structure, which I suspect is substantial. The top carriage bearings are on a boxed in shelf recessed into the bottom carriage. If the structure below that is sealed or has drains elsewhere, it would not need these holes for draining.

How wonderful being a modeler would be if it weren’t for real life! Half an hour of building here, an hour of painting there, but no time for the build report - at least, here are some pics.
Note the pointer plates:
OK, I’ve finished (work on) this model. Here are some pics:
Thank you very much again to all who helped me with this madness. A link to the build report will follow as soon as it’s published.
Happy Easter,
Peter
Well done Peter !

Now you need a truck to pull it.

Right - please join me in prayers for a Mack NO! Until that comes, my M4 HST will have to do (see fifth pic above).
Newlands Models in the UK has a resin Mack NO.
Rick
Thank you for the info, Rick - I should’ve written “styrene Mack”, as I’m not into larger resin casts.
