Jakko, my copy of Hunnicutt is the same as yours…1978 reprinted in 1994. I bought mine from Squadron for $60 USD. I have the original Pete Harlan Sherman book that started it all, first Son of Sherman, and the two-volume set. I very much like my original Son of Sherman and will never part with it. Didn’t mean to highjack the thread Floridabucco. Now get to building your beast and let us see. We can probably answer anything you need to know.
Which book is that? (Actual title, publisher, ISBN?) I can’t find it if I ask the interwebs for "Pete Harlan" Sherman tank book.
Yep, I’ve got both of those too and don’t intend to sell the first edition I also have Firefly by Mark Hayward, of which a second edition is apparently in the works.
A lot of my references look like this. I used to carry them in my work truck in the desert and most of the models I’ve posted here and on other threads were built in my lap at work.
Missed out on Pete Harlem’s book. I was on like an 8 year hiatus from building models and I wouldn’t start back up in the hobby until around 2002. I saw some available on Amazon and E-bay over the years but the prices were ridiculous so I never even considered spending that kind of cash. I’m still hopeful someone will put out an updated edition of this but at some point if I find one at a reasonable price I’ll pick one up.
To do the subject justice, a revised version would need to take into account modern Sherman kits rather than those available when it was written. And since I see the book dates from 1999, this means that a new edition would need to be pretty much rewritten from scratch rather than simply update what’s in the original. I kind of doubt anybody would want to go to that kind of trouble in the age of the WWW.
Wow! as far as I know the Taurus is the first ever printing, something like 1,500 were made in that initial run before they went to Presidio Press…
I think you have the first edition, there has been some confusion regarding the Taurus whether it released in 1976 or 1978 but I think your book proves definitely that it was released in 78.
I think the Orange cover might be something that the Library did, I don’t know, but a tell tale sign is that reference number on the bottom which would not be on the original unaltered cover. Still great price and great book looks to have never been read.
I gotta admit I’m a little bit jealous and I’m not even the jealous type I guess when it comes to Sherman stuff all bets are off, LOL! Congratulations on your purchase! That’s one hell of a find and for that price, wow.
I think that book was one of those reference books, the kind people were not allowed to take out of the library. That and the subject matter might explain the lack of use, it looks brand new inside. Keep it dry, protect it from that humidity out there in Florida.
For a 1956 vehicle your safest markings option is only number plates on the hull and the turret and maybe some numbers on the turret side (photos below that I definitely know were taken in 1956):
