M4A1(76)w VVSS restoration/preservation on Fort Benning

Bravo to all who worked on this restoration project! I’d love to get back to Benning again some day and visit the museums there.

This is the donor vehicle for In The Mood (IV). It previously stood guard outside the NCO Academy at Grafenwöhr, FRG. This pic, recently shared by the USAACC (The Collection), is the as-found for the M4A1(76)w that was used to recreate SSG Lafayette Pool’s ITM(III). It was our start point for the recreation.

An update from the cupola and inside the TSF on Fort Benning:

The periscope is an M8 (1943 according to the data plate). I tried mounting it, but the doghouse and adapter that holds it inside the turret were rusted too badly. Se we’ll punt this downrange a bit and see what we can do to make it happen.

The M8 still had a clear M39A2 reticle inside. It is a crude 1.8x magnification, and was not used as the primary sight since the Telescope of the (76)w was quite good, comparatively.

The most interesting thing I found inside: a range estimation to “aiming point” correction for the gunners. It was mounted to the gun shield next to the gunner’s shoulder.

This is the condition of the periscope mount inside the turret-

And this is the doghouse we’ll have to remove in order to install a new adapter/holder.
