M60A2 in Germany

hi every one

back in the late 70s i was stationed in Germany i was on exercise around Frankfurt area where a USA Unit had come across from USA to take part. they had M551 , gamma goats lots of other stuff and M60A2 i actually got to drive one.

so question does any body know what camo colour scheme would the M60A2 be in GREY or RED Desert Merdic scheme . think it was Grey
i want to build a model of this . thanks Ossie

I was on 'A3s in the early '80’s stationed in Germany and they were painted like this.

The most common MERDC scheme seen in Europe was Winter Verdant.

I haven’t seen any in the Red or Grey Desert MERDC.

Here is a sample of different MERDC schemes to compare.

I vaguely remember a photo of a M60A2 is gray desert MEDEC camo in an old Armor recruiting pamphlet. I haven’t seen that photo in many years. I did find this one from Ft Hood that also looks to be in gray desert MERDEC.

Ft. Bliss was more of a grey desert scheme, primarily the 3D ACR, didn’t notice any of the ADA units with it. I was TDY a few times to Ft. Hood during this same time period and don’t recall seeing the same grey desert on anything out there, this was from 85 to about 89. Yeah, that’s me in that pic
And of course, I could be totally wrong

Nope, that’s MASSTER.

@Michael_Orsbourn If the vehicles were from stocks positioned in Germany, they could have been painted in the MASSTER scheme, see the photo above. If the vehicles were shipped from the US, they could have been in the desert MERDC, either gray or red. If you know what division or unit it was, that could help narrow down what color they used.

I did find this: TRACK-LINK / Gallery / M60A2 Star Ship
So somebody else has done one in the MERDC scheme.

Like Ken says, in that time period they would not have been in MERDC scheme. Most US vehicles would have been in olive drab still, except those in 7th Army in Germany, which would have been in MASSTER scheme. If so, I can certainly see why you would confuse it for MERDC desert: MASSTER was basically a light sand colour with large red-brown and green patches, and smaller black ones.

See this thread for more information on it:

But even more than with MERDC, vehicles generally did not conform to any published camouflage schemes. Which is handy for the modeller, of course

Hard to differentiate from that old picture. My apologies.

I was in C Co, 1/37th armor. We turned in M60s and M60A1s starting in November 1975, and I got my “new” M60A2 in January '76. Our battalion didn’t start panting any camo until late 1978. I saw 1 tank done in 1st Plt, and it seemed to match Summer verdant. My ride, C 23, never got painted while I was there until '78

The color was looking camoed because of dut and dirt, from Graf and Hohenfels trips

Very nice looking A2 build. What paint did you use for the Dark OD?

Hi Ossie, it’s been awhile, you helped me with a Conqueror kit some years ago. When I got to Germany in 1977 all the vehicles armored and soft skin were in MERDC camouflage. I saw M60A2s on REFORGER 78 and I am pretty sure they were in MERDC as well. I am not sure what unit they were from but they had been rail loaded in. They still had the chocks and tie down cables on the tanks. They didn’t ship many if any units from the States with their tanks. They usually drew from POMCUS sites. It would take a month to get them to Europe.
