M790 EL Pershing II missile MGM-31C w/ M1001 Tractor build

Thanks John. And thanks to everyone else who gave me encouragement along the way like Matt, Gino, Rick, Wade, Ken, Kurt, Ralph, Ski, Boots, Carlos and Robin to name a few.

I think it turned out okay. It makes me nervous moving it around. I’ll be glad when it gets to where it’s going and the missile is fully seated in the azimuth ring.

My pitiful attempt at glamour shots:

Other than a few hiccups in the instructions, this wasn’t a bad kit to build, although the M1001 suspension assembly was ridiculously complicated.

It could also use more cooling system parts. I can understand the omission of the radiator because it’ll never be seen, but it really should have an expansion/surge tank behind the air filter on the platform.

If I had it to do all over again, I’d probably change the boom/launch cradle angle by about half what it is by changing the angles of the supports (part S38) for the azimuth ring that are on the base of the boom cylinders. CC @taylorrl

It’s going to live next to an Honest John and a Lacrosse missile, among other oddball stuff.

Anyhow it’s done.

Missed this one until today, so I’ve come in late to the discussion. Heck, I even ran out of “likes” before I got to the final few posts! (Didn’t even know there was a limit… LOL!)

Just wanted to say that I enjoyed the entire thread and really appreciated the amount of time and effort that you put into documenting and sharing the build. Well done with the build blog AND the build!

Thanks!

Thanks Al! So the angle change is to make the boom/cradle lay a bit flatter to the trailer?

Thanks again Al. This is a great build and a good example of how to do a build log.

I love your collection of cold-war missiles. I’ve been gathering kits and going places to take photos of the surviving examples. Once I have my US tube artillery collection more built out, I’ll shift priority of fires to missiles.

Yes, more like this:

pictures for discussion purposes

I figure you could notch the support arms and angle them away (toward the rear) from the booms by about half?

I hope this makes sense.

Edited to add:

And thanks very much for the pictures you sent and your encouragement along the way.
