Making masks/templates

Has anyone ever tried making German disk camo masks by punching through thin sheet brass, or styrene, with a punch and die set? I know they (disk camo masks) already exist in 1/35 scale, but what of 1/48, or 1/72?

The impact may deform the sheet and produce less than sharp edges when painting, and in any case it should not be easy to adapt it to model surfaces.
Masking paper should work better, if you find a way to cut the circles. Sharpened brass tubes, perhaps?

The punch and die sets I was looking at were for leather - no wonder they were so affordable. I found a paper punch that cuts a 2 1/2 mm hole. Punches through thin sheet styrene easily and cleanly. Looks good in 1/72 scale.
