Great subject choice. I have had this kit in my collection for a while but forgot about it with all those new kits keeping showing up at my door. It’s a great looking helicopter and from the most parts I have read that it is a great kit. So, I’ll follow along to see if I remember this “a great kit” parts correctly

Btw, can you throw few pics on here from the reference book? I’ll appreciate them very much

Mike, it depends what type of “Hip” you plan to build. There are countless versions. I just ordered WWP Mi-8 book. I hope it clears some of the cockpit questions. From my experiences Trumpeter helicopters need a lot of rework.

Judging from my sources, the cockpit seats are simplyfied. They should rather look like Verlindens Mi-24 pilot seat.

Hi Mike, these are some pics of my own collection. The interior shots are from an ex-Volksmarine helicopter.

Thanks buddy. And looking at those pilot seats boy those sure have simplified a lot.

I suppose one benefit I might have in the States is that many will not know which version is fully accurate

Hi Mike,
Trumpeter 1/35 helicopter kits are notoriously inaccurate. That´s why I never bought their CH-47 kits. If you don´t care for scale, go with Zvezda´s 1/48 scale Hip kit.

I have gone the 1/72 route, not any more correct but smaller foot print.

HermannB, I saw your post and it brought back mixed memories of my Hip build.

On my kit the rear clam shell doors were warped or I had distorted the main section while doing all the mods.
Good luck with yours, I will watch with interest.

Wow! That brings back memories – of the real thing not the kit; in Bosnia back whenever, all constituent nations of the Brit Division contributed some form of rotary wing support. I think I only travelled in one twice. I was in charge of both working visits and VIP visits to our AO so inevitably, given the state of the roads (and distances) I always had to plan the respective visits by air.

I remember on one occasion, with whatever luminary I was escorting, how startled he was when aboard a Czech Hip, one of the crew opened the compartment door to see how we all were, still smoking his cigarette. The seats (as I understand it), were atop the fuel tanks. I’m not sure my somewhat fastidious VIP ever quite recovered.

Another time, one crashed (with only minor injuries I believe – thankfully); at the evening brief, the Air Branch (that is the staff branch within the Div HQ) briefed us that they had “spoken to Sarajevo” (superior HQ) and had “asked for a Hip replacement” which caused no small amount of mirth, not least amongst the General himself, who , whilst not decrepit in any way, was probably more aware of inevitable age and frailty than most of us(!)

None of this of course Hermann, helps one bit with your build!

hi Brian,
never mind. I always like good “war stories”.
I did the first surgery by removing the IR jammer. The hole will be covered with PE and frame. also need to fill the hole for the APU.

Started some surgery yesterday. I want to build a Mi-8 T and Trumpeter kit despicts a Mi-17. So some parts on the fuselage need to be removed, holes filled and sanded.
