You can verify the ‘black+yellow = OD green’ by opening up a graphics editor, picking ‘0xFFFF00’ (bright yellow) as your selected color, then dragging down the brightness slider, and watching how the perceived color changes.
Yup, Black + ochre were used to make French Artillery Olive as applied to carriages & limbers in the Gribeauval System
All other colours can be made from the three Primaries – red, blue, yellow.
All colours can be tonally modified with white, or “black” which as mentioned is typically an indigo or deepest tan.
Years ago I mixed a marigold yellow with a mid-purple & got a surprising result. Technically they’re near opposite colours on a spectrum wheel so I was expecting they’d cancel each other out to make a warm grey, but no…
Excellent!
I’ll just get some boxes of those three colours from Humbrol and some matting agent
and then I’ll have my paint needs covered.

On an aside… Just about an hour-or-so after watching the video, the touching story, ‘A Dog of Flanders (1960)’ was aired on TCM (Turner Classic Movies). In it, there’s a scene where a young artist learns from a master painter how to mix black and yellow to achieve green — uncanny!

Where I come from, when you mix Yellow and Black you get the Pittsburg Steelers.
So black + yellow gets you perennial mediocrity and an early playoff exit ![]()
Sorry, I’m a cardinals fan so I have to drag everyone down with me ![]()
Black + yellow will make olive drab, but it’s not really green (unless you’re just going to paint army vehicles). Yellow + blue will give a much wider range of greens.
