Thanks a lot Robin ! I don’t know how you did it, but I’m glad you did it ! :+1:

you know Joel was a really good man that had one goal in life (like most of us), and that was to be out of the Army. He had plans and the backing to open a four or five star bistro up the road from Churchill Downs (KY Derby). The Army wouldn’t let him out on a medical issue. In Brussles a couple four star generals asked him what he needed, and of course he told them to get out of the Army! He was already an E7, so that was pretty much it for him.

Our first hot meal (other than hot C-Rats) was powdered eggs and that greasy bacon that came in the can. Add to that red eye gravy. Guys were going back for more eggs!! His powdered eggs actually tasted like eggs instead of cardboard. We ate till our stomachs ached! He was an excellent baker, and had me do some wheeling and dealing with the sea bees to get somekind of flour that was used in baking. I got him four or five big bags of the stuff (50lb. bags?) and few other things on his list. Back in Chu Lai they thought I’d flipped my lid, but a bottle of Canadian Club delivered it post haste. Then he finds out they were getting pop corn in the rear areas, and a radio message to the Sargent Major got that job done. One day I go into his mess hall around eight in the morning (he never asked what time it was, but are you all hungry? ) after a really long night of shooting. There on the counter were sweet rolls!! He said try one and tell me what you think. I ate three or four. About this time the ammo resupply starts to roll in, and he sends somebody out there with a bunch of them for the chopper guys to munch on. Did the same with the ration resupply everyday. We start seeing extra crates of chicken and other things dropped off. Then one day they are flying out load after load of ammo (all six guns were kept busy from about ten at night till day light). He sends a big box of fried chicken out to the Chinooks, and they thought it was to die for. It was just his nature. He looked over at the helo pad one day and sees a bunch of LRRP’s waiting for their ride home. He goes out there and gets them to come in and eat. After that the word spread like wild fire. The food was great, but still not quite as good as the Air Force Mess in Chu Lai (they had pine apple upside down cake everyday). About this time he tells the First Sargent that it might not be a bad idea to re institute KP again. Top asked him he as trying get him killed? He had volunteers everyday!

Fast forward to Thanksgiving. Of course the Colonel and his crew come out with the Sargent Major. They eat with every battery, and are very friendly (well most are). Charlie and Bravo batteries are his last stops, and bad food is expected at them, but it really the thought that counts right? We are the last stop and the Colonel said this was the best food he’d ate in months. (turkey loaf mostly with ham and and the usual others. Come Christmas we get two turkeys plus the usual stuff, and of course the Colonel and his boys come out. Joel baked the two turkeys and made a candied glaze for each one (green and red). The Colonel ate like a pig! Then turned around and offered Joel another stripe to be the head battalion mess sargent. Joel said don’t insult me! You can eat here everyday if you want to, but these are my kids and this is where I should be. Colonel spent the night as he wanted to watch us fire up the back side of the Hiep Duc Ridge line right after midnight. Then ate powdered eggs with us in the morning. Sargent Major wanted to stay another day! Ten weeks later that little mess hall was hit by two rockets. Seriously pissed off a bunch of people.

Joel did get his wish. He opened a four or five star place about half way between Louisville and Ft. Knox. I imagine Joel has gone to meet his maker by now as he was considered to be very old in the combat zone in 1968.

I opened the image in a new tab,
right click on the image to get the
little menu with the option to ā€˜Copy Image’
and then simply ctrl-v to paste the
copied image into the post.
The result is a non-clickable image so it
can’t be expanded to the full size which
is a bit of a pity (c’est dommage)
I saved the link in my post so that it is still
available.

We’re on opposite sides Khouli. I’ll believe my viewpoint over yours. I hope where ever you live is a safe place compared to the hell that is in Mariupol today.

Seems like he was worth his weight in gold

Or during Fin commissioning, as a loader setting the recoil indicator and then watch it wing past ā€œcease fireā€ ding off the turret ring and land on the floor. APFSDS, the only round that destroyed the vehicles at both ends of the gun.

Yep perfect for blending into Lego forests. I guess from any distance the colours are OK, but if you’ve got time to paint straight lines, boxes & corners it would surely be better spent painting vertical stripes resembling…like…trees. Otherwise maybe they should try this invisibility cloak…

when you can actually hear the sizzle of the fuse on a satchel charge at two in the morning, and have no idea where it’s at or where you going to get outta the way.

Your down to a fifty round segment of the last belt on the planet and Top yells at you that he’s gonna bust your head big time. Course you yell back ā€œyou and what army?ā€

Making the crossing at a designated ā€œblue crossingā€ after letting go with a green star cluster; when a group of idiots open up on you standing in the middle of the river with a 50 cal. Browning. You then stay in the river till somebody finally goes and busts their heads. P.S. a 50 cal round sounds like a freight train rolling thru the river bottom land.

Hearing your buddy say ā€œwas this your idea?ā€

Crawling out the door of a bunker and for some reason look to the left. There on top the sand bag flash wall is a big cat with eyes the size of silver dollars maybe two feet away. Now that brings on a serious
pucker factor!

Your first cobra crawling between your legs

Just another question I should know by now. :pensive:
T80 BV 's are used by the Ukraine. Are T80 BVM’s also or only by the Russians?
T64 BVM’s. have they been used by the Ukranians yet or are there just not many?
T80U’s are Ukranian or are T80UD’s, or neither? Have they been seen yet?

Flotation cells. US, and others, used them on several versions on the M113 family, some still in use today.
Ken

From what I can tell (yeah that and $5 will get you a beer), The Ukrainians are using primarily T-64s and T-80BVs. I have yet to come across photos of the Ukrainians using T-80Us or their follow on variants.

Here’s a list that’s updated daily of photo tally’s of equipment captured, destroyed or abandoned by each side.
