Scale models are often used for mission planning and training aids when time allows on raids such as the bin Laden op.
This is the actual model made by CIA of the POW Camp for the 1970 SonTay Prison Raid in North Vietnam.
Odysseus knew this trick when dealing with Polyphemus, and clung to the bellies of sheep after blinding him.
On a far more recent note, and somewhat more believable:
1984: Reforger, somewhere near Viborg(?) in Denmark - a US Army Special Forces team is tasked with blowing up a radio tower. The problem: The tower sits atop a gently sloping hill, and there is no concealment for at least 300-400m in any direction. But there are cows there.
You can imagine the rest. Mission successful. Those sure were some noisy cows though.
Funny, the USAF didn’t use the H-47 shown in the first photo.
Two and a Half Men, Alan spent the episode building all sorts of models, lots of scenes with him building, kits in his bedroom, and piles of kits in the background, but this is the only pic I can find
No, but 160th SOAR uses the MH-47 and frequently worked inserting SEALs in Afghanistan. I guess they used the wrong toy for the briefing
Similar use of toy/model in “Raid on Entebbe”
My issue was the markings used and not joint operations. If they had white US Army, while white would be incorrect but at least it’s the correct branch. They could have also left off those markings like the other clip. US Navy uses/used “models” for aircraft movements on carriers.
I have same issue of wrong markings on the 1:1 version as well.
Now if they had a UH-1N with USAF markings, that might have been a different story as the USAF has/had some they used. AF has pj’s that could be used for a similar mission. Now if still/ever forward deployed (probably not for the N) at least in this case would need more research.
The wife and I have been watching the series Madame Secretary on Hulu, or whatever streaming app it is that carries the series. Model building have popped in two different episodes so far. One, her husband is building the old Visible V-8 kit and manages to get their son involved to make it actually work (via YouTube video lesson no less). And a second where the president’s chief of staff is advised to take up a relaxing activity after a stress induced heart attack and somehow he mentions that he used to build model airplanes. At the end of the episode, he lays out his work area and begins to work on the latest boxing of the 1/48 Revellogram F4U Corsair.
And then from Empire of the Sun, we have a young Christian Bale aggravating his nanny with one of his stick and tissue model airplanes…
Apologies if I have posted this gif before, but I do love it…
Not a good picture, but this is from the television program Unsolved Mysteries, Season 7, Episode 20, Saviors of the Dover Family. A family that was involved in a automobile accident is visited by the woman that stopped and helped them. It was Christmas time and she brought presents including a couple of models.
Wait, let me guess…
Criminal Minds serie.
Season 4, episode 21 “The shade of gray”.
A child has killed his brother because his model has been broken by him.
Horrible episode
The model is seen during a “flash-back scene”. That was a wooden model if I remember.
No pictures found .
The series Loki, last couple of episodes of series 2. “Not to scale” model of time loop control centre thingy. Can’t seem to get a screen grab, the evil mouse won’t allow it!
Nurse Willis (Reta Shaw) repacking Michael’s suitcase in Man Afraid (1957), with Phyllis Thaxter in the background.
Earlier in the film, Simmons (Eduard Franz) breaks Michael’s glider.
Yes, he’s not happy with what’s happened. It’s worth a watch if you like old movies, it’s on YouTube:
