Sitting here watching a “Freaks and Geeks” rerun and there was this scene with Sam in his room and and I noticed the models on his desk to the right of him. Airfix, Esci and some others.
Looks like a Matchbox M40 GMC on top of some Hasegawa kit on the left stack
Sounds like the fallout within IPMS USA after this year’s Nationals…
Fallout? Over what? I went. I found the show very enjoyable. Of course, if it was about judging I never stick around for that anyway.
A judging photo went viral and there was alleged unwanted harassment I am told.
There was a controversy regarding some judging in the Mecha category, and some other about moving, looking underneath models. Lots of griping on Facebook about both, followed by the Executive board making edicts to the National Contest Committee. Rules have been changed, judges suspended, and many others resigned/quit. The next Nationals will be missing a lot of experienced folks.
Dang, didn’t know it had that much drama. I did see the photo of the model held above shoulder height. That’s is a bit excessive and tempting Murphy too much imho.
If only their meetings were all carried out that way, folks’d be lining up to attend!
Sounds like as much controversy over referees as the Rugby World Cup
On a less light note, this is a TV fictionalised representation of the bedroom ceiling of a real life murderer. I have no idea if this had any basis in reality, or if it was just used as shorthand for weirdo, or perhaps to symbolise a failure to move fully from child to adult.
In Bertrand Tavernier’s In The Electric Mist (2009), Murphy Doucet (played by Bernard Hocke) builds plastic and wood aircraft kits, but he has another much worse “hobby”…
H.P.
Obviously not a scene from either of the movies, but I remember when I read the book “The Stand” there was a part where one of the main characters, Stu Redman, was stranded for the winter due to being snowed in and during that time he built models to pass the time.
WOW! Is there a summary or thread you could refer me to to read the details?
Is this what’s being referred to?

IPMS - this-sums-it-up-perfectly
During my time as an IPMS member & certified IPMS Nationals judge that sort of thing never happened to my knowledge.
I respect the work that goes into judging. I did it a few times back in the 90’s, but even then I didn’t agree with some of the results in categories similar to mine. There was a noticeable trend in judges falling for the"wow" factor of certain techniques, while ignoring basic modelling skills like wheel alignment, (along the N/S axis) eliminating seams, and often just plain decaling. Matter of fact, I’ve seen a few highly touted builds on here that were ruined by bad decaling, so I don’t even bother to comment on the build at all. It does of course depend upon the temperament of the builder.
But while judging is hard work and often goes unacknowledged, we also recognize that judges are constantly called out on this site for their shenanigans. Just in the past few weeks there have been several anecdotes about silly judging antics.
And picking up a model that high is absolutely uncalled for. To me, picking up a model period should be unnecessary 99% of the time, I recall a judge dinging a soft skin because the bottom of the tires (which had been lightly sanded) were not painted. He has to lift it off of the base to notice that.
So after that very long introduction - perhaps it is time for some judges to be suspended or resign, regardless of “experience” level. I’ve got well over forty years experience playing guitar, and I’m still not very good…
Bring in some new faces, train them well, and dare I say, have a peering out process like Ranger School.
If I ever make a silly cock up I’d welcome the feedback! Especially if it’s a finishing mistake. Sometimes it needs another set of eyes to see these things and it helps with the next project.
Wade, here is a thread on the IPMS site with more information.
Thank you, Carlos.
Some of the best episodes of the serie.
