Mr. Color leveling thinner may be going away

I was talking with an actual brick and mortar store owner of 40 years. He has a variety of paint brands to include Mr. Color. He was saying that there were issues at Mr. Color and the leveling thinner was going away…:frowning: Now I don’t work for Mr. Color and can’t back up that statement but…If you are a Mr.Color leveling thinner fan…You might want to investigate further. Stocking up is normally better than running out.

Not good news, but there’s a possible solution, if it happens. Mike, with MCW Finishes has developed his own leveling thinner, made here in the USA. I use it now, works with a wide variety of paints; I’m looking forward to seeing him at the Nats.

MCLT shortages?

That’s a scary :fearful: possibility

Ordered a restock of MCLT just in case.

FWIW - used GPT 5.6 SOL Pro Ultra to research and found the following after it crunched ~125 website etc…

As of August 3, 2026, there is no evidence that Mr. Color Leveling Thinner is being discontinued in the United States. The evidence points to temporary supply disruptions being misinterpreted as discontinuation:

GSI Creos’s current product page still lists both T106 (110 ml) and T108 (400 ml).

Its June 2026 price-revision document specifically gives T106 and T108 new prices and says newly priced stock would begin shipping around July.

Manufacturers do not normally schedule new production pricing for an ended product.

GSI’s May 28 supply update said earlier raw-material procurement problems were moving toward resolution and supply routes should progressively stabilize.

An earlier, now-deleted Reddit rumor that Mr. Hobby might leave the U.S. market, itself based on an informal conversation with a retailer representative.

GSI’s genuine March 2026 temporary production-allocation announcement.

A later distributor-shortage report saying dealer backorders would be cancelled and reordered from a reduced list until supply recovered. That concerned allocation and backorder management—not permanent discontinuation.

So the most accurate conclusion is: the discontinuation rumor is unsupported.

Temporary shortages and cancelled dealer backorders are real, but T106/T108 remain active products.

An unpublished future U.S.-import decision is always possible, but no public manufacturer or U.S. distributor notice currently supports one at this time.

Of course, AI gets stuff wrong a lot of the time but I wanted to share what information turned up.

I ordered 2, 400ml bottles so I can sleep better at night.

It’s certainly possible, but I gotta say hobby shops are second only to barber shops and gun shops for spreading unfounded rumors.

Sure hope it is just the rumor mill running amuck. However, I use MCW paints which are a very good paint. I have not tried their leveling thinner but if it is a good as their paints all is not lost. Maybe it is time to give it a go. It appears MCW’s site is down or running slow as they are vending at the Nats. Anyway I checked SprayGunner and they sell it 16oz for $14.

Are you the guy that started that whole run on toilet paper back in 2020???

I went to order a kit and MLT is OOS. But I see some other online vendors still have it. I seriously hope it is bad info. MLT has saved several paint jobs I’ve botched - it’s kind of “I’m a mediocre hobbyist” voodoo in my place…

Did a quick google and it seems anything from Gunze comes to the US in waves. So it’s feast or famine. For the longest time, Mr. Surfacer 1500 black (in the bottle) was impossible to find here, but seems to have recently come back in stock (for now).

Never been a problem over here in the UK, but I suspect we also get it in waves. The pink primer has only recently come back into stock at my LHS and I grabbed a jar because I have a few projects with yellow in the finish and I hear pink’s great for yellow. Will be interesting to see how that works.

I do though wish Gunze would make their thinner less smelly. Every time I use it I reckon it takes a year off my life. That’s why I don’t like airbrushing their paints!
