My wife hates the hobby

There is a, somewhat, fitting story from the Tales of King Arthur. It goes something like this:

King Arthur is walking through the woods contemplating a dilemma. He comes upon an retched old hag. She offers him a solution, but only if he will marry her. He agrees for the sake of the kingdom. One of his knights (can’t remember who) tells Arthur that he will wed the hag in his place, as it is unbefitting a King to have to. Blah blah balh… the knight marries the hag, they return to their wedding chambers, and lo and behold, when his newly wed wife enters the room the knight is stunned. She has transformed into the most beautiful woman he has ever seen. It turns out she has been cursed: hag by day, babe by night. (Guess where Shrek got the idea from?) It is either one or the other. She gives him the choice. Out of consideration for her he chooses that she be the beauty by day, so as not to be mocked by the court. She then reprimands him saying, “So, you’d rather me be hag in our bed so that you wil never have desire for me?”. The knight switches his answer to which his wife replies, “You wish me to be mocked and scorned by the whole court then, and keep my beauty to yourself?” The Knight, absolutely beside himself throws his hands in the air, and proclaims, “You choose!”. BANG. By allowing her to choose her own destiny the spell is broken. The moral of the story? A woman wants, what a woman wants.

My wife digs it. The cost of a good armor kit equal at least two lap dances. And until they seriously redesign the clubs, she knows where I do most of my building.

…the story doesn’t have a ending because she hasn’t made up her mind yet.

…it’s your fault for the choice she made.

…she wishes she made the other choice.

Also what did she do beforehand to warrant such a spell?

To paraphrase the first three laws of thermodynamics,

  1. You can’t win
  2. You must lose
  3. It doesn’t matter anyway!

My ex did not like me spending money on my hobbies (modeling, tabletop wargaming, RPGs, SF/History books). But she is my ex now.

My wife is quite different. In Ecuador, model building is a small demographic, mainly because the middle class is much smaller there, compared to developed nations. But it is a growing & active community. Thus, she never grew up around anyone who built models, let alone anything more exotic like tabletop wargames or RPGs. So she is fascinated by the things I do. She has her own hobby: making roses out of a home-grown type of clay, which she sometimes uses to decorate cool branches, or make coronas. So we both have our own hobbies we participate in. And we can do them side-by-side too.

I think there may be other things going on if the chosen target’s time spent on modelmaking i.e. the anger’s possibly about something else entirely. That’s the end of my psych seminar.

There have been times when SWMBO irritation was deserved - something I shoulda kinda done already which was perfectly necessary, but I didn’t either because I couldn’t face it or disagreed about its importance, or just “forgot”…compared to say getting those tracks to hang properly. Good time-management is something most of us should be fairly good at, I soon learned to make a point of dealing with anything that SWMBO was likely to get pissed off about before proceeding to the bench. Win/win.

Don’t ask me why I remember this, and no I haven’t just done a search. A few years ago I was experimenting with 3D figure printing and someone here (I’m sure it wasn’t me  ) posted a link to two sets of “Roman” orgy figures, memory’s real fuzzy  but I think there were 10 or 12 “interlocking” figures in each set…maybe 11  . Leave those on the workbench and then there might be problems.

Ah, that might explain the funny looks from my wife the other day when these arrived (courtesy of Aurora from Japan):

They’re for a project, for a project!

My wife has no problem at all with my hobby. Not even my spending which has been curtailed (I’ve even gone through my stash and set aside a few boxes of stuff to get rid of), she’s actually intrigued by it she says and wishes she could do it. I told her anytime she wants to try , there’s an entire hobby shop in the basement for her to start.

I do almost everything around my house. Laundry, cooking, cleaning; my kids are mostly out of the house except for my oldest who spends most days at his girlfriends and comes home only to do laundry. That’s when I volunteer him for stuff to do as I need lol. Plus I do all the outside work in the yard, pool etc. This weekend is Memorial Day weekend with the holiday actually on Monday which here in the US is the official start of summer although the weather here on Long Island is a complete washout for all three days! Perfect weekend for some modeling you would think. But I spent 3 hours out in the pouring rain pressure washing my brick patio yesterday only getting half of it done, and will do the same today.

I’m no saint, or perhaps my wife is just very tolerant. Stash is off the scale, and I’m a less than a tidy builder. Our small spare room is, basically a mess. I have plans to build a purpose-made studio in my garden, but illness has compromised that this year. Thereafter, some time in 2027 I’m guessing, once built, shell be more than happy with the recovery of her spare room.

I tend to do the cooking Mon to Fri as she still works; she’s aghast at the stash, but then, so am I.

The key is the studio, and a decent health recovery(!) - the latter always fraught as I’m beginning to discover. At long last though, I feel I’m sort of going in the right direction. She has her hobbies too, so I think we’re happy enough; storage of completed models has yet to rear its ugly head though; that’ll come soon enough(!)

women don’t like to see men happy because women want men to get joy in their lives from them and not another source such as modelling basically she’s jealous
