Perma-scene modeling compound

Hi guys,

While cleaning out my basement, underneath my armor modeling stash ( and stored with my model railroad stuff) I came across some old scenery products I haven’t used in at least 25 years. One of them was this- 2 boxes worth- Perma-scene.

Does anyone still use this stuff in modeling at all?? I might experiment with it by adding some water to it but I figured I ask before I get rid of it.

Perma Scene is vermiculite mixed with powdered glue. You can buy vermiculite panels used as insulation, pulverize them, and add your own glue. Doesn’t look as good as Celluclay, or Sculptamold, though.

But is that FIREPROOF?

Can’t be too flammable seeing as it’s still used for insulation!

That’s what I was wondering since I haven’t used it in decades.

I wonder if it has asbestos in it. There are no ingredients listed on the box but it says non toxic.

Speaking of sculptamold, I tried using it recently for the first time and it dried so fast I didn’t have any working time. Anyone have this problem?

Sculptamold is basically Celluclay mixed with plaster of paris. I’ve tried it myself. It dries with an interesting texture, but it does dry quickly - probably because of the PoP. It beats having to wait almost a week for plain Celluclay to completely dry! It’s always advisable to mix in your appropriate ground color with craft acrylic paints when adding water.

Yes I’ve found that out. I looked at a few tutorials about the stuff on you tube and I like the base it provides for ground work; great tip about mixing in some terrain color. I’ll try that next time. I followed the directions in the package and from the tutorials but I was surprised though how fast it started to set up. And I was only using it for a 1” square figure base!

Wow. Really? It’s been banned here in the US for a long time I think.

If you want slow plaster of Paris down a touch of white vinegar or citric acid. Don’t know the exact ratios but it doesn’t take a lot. I think i used about half a teaspoon of vinegar in about 500ml of plaster of Paris last time i did it and it extended the curing time beyond my patience level for that particular task.
