If I’m not too late about that extra crane …
A crane serves to load/unload boats/ships, having it tucked away by an inside corner limits the
work it can perform.
I would position that extra crane somewhere around here:
Thanks for the thoughts. That end of the pier has the fuel loading pipes and would mean the crane hanging off the dio. I have moved it more central to where it is and it swings to both end of that section. This being a small coastal harbour small fishing boats and the odd small coal steamer would probably have have been their main purpose. I’m sure things will get moved around as the various elements get added. Thanks for the idea.
I have a Humber Box to build that might be a good fit and some Officers that might work well on the balcony. Another MC for the RN Despatch Rider and I thought a Cameraman recording the scene would be appropriate.
A couple for inside the Lighthouse and one to whistle at by the canteen. The tea drinkers I originally placed inside would be better used by the canteen.
This is really inspiring me for a diorama I’m planning of a French dockside. Where did you get the lobster pots and fishing net in the right scale please?
Hi, thanks for looking in. The fishing nets I made from netting, painted them and added rope and floats as far as I can remember. The Crab and Lobster pots were from O scale train accessories. I just googled them and found a model shop that sold them. Sorry I can’t remember which one now as I’ve already deleted the order.
Hi folks, made a start on the sea bed. It will take a few days to dry and then I’ll start to add some sea weed and kept and stuff. It should be an interesting to see how it turns out.
mate, before you go to heavy into it, if its a coastal scene it may differ a bit to what a quay side may look like further in.
This is St Ives with tide out, there is little to no vegetation on the harbour floor, and I have been down there at all times in the year and it doesnt change.
As an alternative angle to the shots by @Johnnych01 (and noting the excellent use of army aviation assets to get those photos!) I had a look around for some differing looks.
The first is a photo of Polperro Harbour in Cornwall which has more mud but also small rocks visible.
I am quite prepared to fly over there from my convalescence to assist in de visu scouting of locations to aid this fantastic work. I am certain @Johnnych01 and I could scout multiple locations and prepare some photos for your consideration….which we may also enhance with subsequent recommendations for good pubs next to the assessed port locations.
All seriousness this is just tracking very nicely!
Hi Johnny, Thanks. Lived by the sea side for many years and in Bangor NI with it’s own small harbour. Depending on tide and season some parts would be just like you show and at other times more strewn with sea weed. By the piers themselves most would have kelp and weed around the sides and bottom of the posts.I’ll see how it works out. Thanks for the thoughts.
Thanks Sam, the second pic reminds me a lot of the small harbours back home. I think how much sea weed and kelp is around is dependent on the season and the weather conditions. Very useful.
