It is my intention to create a large number of markings and generic stencils for science fiction machines. The idea is to combine many such markings and stencils into a single image in scalable vector format. The image can then be scaled and printed on decal paper, resulting in many useful markings for science fiction projects.
Ideas for Science Fiction Markings:
Access Panels Stencils
Friend or Foe Identification
Mascots
Panel Demarcation Stripes
Pin Ups
Remove Before Flight
Unit Badges
Unit Graphics (artistic tail markings, etc.)
Vehicle Numbers
Warning Placards
Weight Class Badges (such as for bridge crossing)
I will design these markings as time allows and post the results here for everyone to use.
Is there something particular you want for an existing or upcoming project?
In essence, every single decal ever created can be used on a fictional creation. Please do not use this discussion to post lists of science fiction type decals already in existence because that is not useful. If there is something specific you want for a project, something you cannot create for yourself, something you can describe, I want to help.
Example 1: I am building a giant robot. I want to to mark it with alien symbols. Two fonts I found are really neat but I want to combine them into something new, about 5mm in height. Is that possible?
It is and I can help.
Example 2: The speeder I am building has a nuclear reactor. I would like to mark it with some appropriate stencils. Can you help?
Yes, I can.
Eample 3: Wilma Flintstone is the hottest babe ever. I want to put Wilma Flinstone on everything. Can you make me one hundred pin-ups of Wilma Flintstone???
If I were to dabble in Sci-Fi again, I’d want to development a numbering system based possibly on geometric shapes, obvious by the their position on the ship as a serial number. (like a tail number on a UASF aircraft) To reinforce this idea I’d take one of the symbols and place it very prominently and very large on the craft, which would plainly be a number in whatever system that was.
For lettering I’d use gibberish. But cool gibberish, perhaps somewhat Hebrew-esque, Klingon-esque, et al. I’ve always found it amusing that the lingua franca in the Star Trek universe is a language from a tiny island nation on an insignificant rock on the ass end of our galaxy.
I’ve looked at quite a few over the years. Most are either way too involved to be used as a writing alphabet, or rely heavily on symbols we already know, such as astrological symbols. I’m very partial to the Klingon alphabet, although in a thicker font.
Thats a great idea. For smaller detail/decals I use aircraft decals. Usually a size smaller than the scale of the model. They really look good on kits that are small and a bit difficult to read, but look really good for effect.
The first one brings back bad memeories of 70’s era video games. The second much better, whilst the third one is spot on. I dig that one.
Some of the others remind me of when I was learning Thai.
Options include actual scripts that are currently not used anymore. Very fun to write actual words and phrases that only you and those familiar with the respective scripts can actually read.
I see Baybayin in visual arts and tattoos only and do not see shorthand anymore.
I’m ashamed to say although it’s part of my heritage, I never learned as much Tagalog in the PI as I would have liked. Just enough to keep 'em guessing. Hey, make sure your ruck doesn’t make any Kalampog. The looks they had on their faces was precious,
