How close is the Tamiya AS-15 Tan Spray to the tan/brown base color on the K2 Black Panther? If not, would it work fine? Are there any spray cans that are similar to the color on the K2?

AS-15 is a USAF Tan color. The ROK sceme is US MERDC which uses Field Drab (FS 30118). FS-15 is lighter and more red-brown than Field Drab. A perfect match to Field Drab is XF-52 Flat Earth.
Here are Tamiya colors that match the ROK MERDC pattern.
- Forest Green (FS 34079): Tamiya XF-61 (Dark Green) or Tamiya XF-67 (NATO Green).
- Field Drab (FS 30118): Tamiya XF-52 (Flat Earth).
- Sand (FS 30277): Mix Tamiya XF-57 (Buff) with 20-30% Tamiya XF-2 (Flat White) to achieve the proper faded, sandy tone.
- Flat Black (FS 37038): Tamiya XF-1 (Flat Black) or Tamiya XF-69 (NATO Black).
A few notes on the Korean camo - stick to the painting guide as much as you can.* While their schemes are derived from MERDC, the do not adhere to the US standards as far as the pattern. And rarely do they use the bone and black on the top surfaces.
- The ERA tiles are not the green depicted in the guide, unless you want an early demonstrator that use wooden mockups for the tiles. For whatever reason - intentional, or the paint just faded quicklly, the tiles had that odd green. For operational K2s, just stick with whatever base green you’re using.
Tamiya’s XF-52 is not a good match. It’s not as saturated as the actual color, which leans slightly toward a reddish brown. You can add XF-64 to taste until you acheive the shade you want.
For the green, XF-67 is not a bad choice. Neither is XF-64 (JGSFD Olive drab)
But for best results you can mix:
2 parts Tamiya XF-58 Olive Green
2 parts Tamiya XF-13 J.A. Green
1 part Tamiya XF-60 Dark Yellow
It’s a matter of how exact you want to get. Use a touch more yellow for scale effect if you prefer that.

I will def try XF-67. Wondering if you can substitute the XF-52 for XF-60 and mix that with the XF-64, as I’ve seen others do. I’ve got vallejo buff, black, and white, so I’m good for that area.

XF-52 is a very different colour from XF-60, so the mix won’t come out the same.
If you have to buy paint, why not go for the Mr. Aqueous colours that Academy recommends? I thought they looked pretty good when I built my K2 last January. As long as you make sure to get Mr. Aqueous and not Mr. Hobby, they handle just like Tamiya XF-series paints.

If you have Vallejo, model color 70.921 pos. 141 (white top number) .921 pos.128 (black top number) English uniform this looks good for the Korean tan, originally sprayed a tan on my ROK T-80 and it turned out crap I then hand painted the Vallejo and really happy with how it turned out, but as Jakko said why not just use the recommended colours.

Ykw that’s probably a better idea. I don’t have an airbrush so I will have to figure out how to hand brush them…
Does look like theyre backordered on scalehobbyist though, I’ll need them within a few weeks…

Perhaps, although the instructions do say to use 71.026 or 70.874 but again I don’t know which is more accurate

In that case, I would recommend to not go for the Mr. Aqueous paints. Tamiya has a reputation for being difficult to brush-paint, but these are worse. Excellent for spraying, but not good if you have to apply them by brush.

I actually might invest in a decent starter airbrush, so I am looking for ones I can use to airbrush with. Only issue is that the Mr Acqeous paints are on backorder and I don’t know when they’ll be back. I need paints in at least 3 weeks, one month tops.

this is a personal choice, what you think is a better match, you are the one that has to be happy with the colour, I looked at .874 but I felt that the English uniform was a better colour it had more of an earthy tone and would suit the T80 better. The Vallejo will go down beautifully this hand brushing just slightly dilute with water.

Here is my try at the current ROK army camo.
I used XF-65 Field Grey for the green and Prince August 26 US Vietnam tan brown for the field drab.

Did use a paint converter and got 71.035 as a very close mathc to the Mr Acqueous given by the instructions

That’s a very nice match, and is nothing like XF-52, which is in front of me as I type this.
