Question about M1 abrams tank crew picture

I’m pretty sure all M4 Carbines have a 16.1” barrel, but I’m often wrong.

All the M4 pictures in this thread have the pinned and welded barrel extension on them (including the M4 in your sprue picture) to bring them into NFA barrel length compliance although I’m sure dudes like @18bravo had access to more exotic (shorter) systems.

I can vouch for that; @18bravo had access to weapons and equipment that are not standard issue to regular forces. Mainly because of the unique mision requirements that people like @18bravo have to undergo.
That baing said. A general-issue M4 that a tanker would have would look like this.

Standard Colt (or FN) M4A1 Carbine with a 14.5" barrel, fitted with an Aimpoint CompM4 an AN/PEQ-15 laser pointer and some sort of white light illuminator. If earlier in the war, a CompM2 (M68 CCO) and an AN/PEQ-2A IR laser pointer.

SF-types would have the same setup, but with much shorter barrel lengths, to enable them to traverse through confined spaces; though most times, they would also have 14.5" barreled carbines as well… Again, mission requirements would dictate equipment choices.

I had the use of a shorty 416 piston upper a few times, but there was no real advantage to it unless we were rolling in NAV’s. (non-attributable vehicles)

Thanks for your help!

there will be a sling and some clips for the mount on the shield.

Looking very good!
One last suggestion if I may - move the M68 farther forward (just above magazine) and add BUIS (Back Up Iron Sight) as seen below.

I don’t know if any of the major players make one, but there’s not much to one. Here are a few shots of mine:

I’ll do that.
Should be quite easy to scratch. :+1:t2:

Since you’re removing the M68 anyway, go ahead and put a small block of styrene underneath it to raise it a bit. Not your fault, the parts you got don’t accurately portray the height you need for this setup.
Your PEQ-2 is slightly in the way of the M68.

yeah, i noticed the M68 is pretty low… Raise it with some styrene, so it clears the PEQ-2 and add a small block to replicate the Matech BUIS and you should be G2G.

Something like this

Maybe a bit overscale but it’s there

I’m not sure if it’s legal here in Sweden. :joy:

OK, I have to admit that it has been a while since I was a tanker, long before any of these weapons were in use.
Would a tanker actually have all those bells and whistles on their M4? Tank crewmen do not spend a lot of time “kicking in doors and shooting up the place.” That’s what the tank is for. That rifle is meant for self-defense, or when your tank has been killed/disabled and you have to walk home, providing you are still alive and able to walk. Additionally, you have to get in and out of the hatch. If you think it’s tough trying to get in/out of a humvee or non-standard vehicle with a weapon, try it in a tank. Tank hatches are infamous for being small, difficult to get through, and up over your head, which just makes everything that much more difficult.

Also, would the M1 tanker have the magazine ammo pouches to feed the M4?

Having just 30 5.56mm rounds is better than nothing (sure beats bring a pistol to a rifle fight) until one runs out of 30 5.56mm rounds really fast…

My question would be - did you guys have a go bag of any kind? If you had to unass the tank, things must have gone terribly wrong. I’d want a go bag with me. Even if it were strapped on the outside with a quick release. The likelihood of one round screwing up all of your mags would be minimal. If a round hit an MRE it would probably be an improvement.
So - were there go bags?

Never forward deployed but don’t recall anyone discussing this. My TC’s were GW1 vets. If we had leave the hog, it’s a real bad day. 9m would be all we had on us.

A tanker now can be deployed just like a infantryman if the mission doesn’t need alot of Tanks.
The army now has one basic training center for combat arms.
Never get off the tank concept is long over.

While not ideal, the coaix and loader stations are 5.56. Hopefully a belt or can could be grabbed to reload a clip.

Bustle rack on the back of the turret. For some reason they made us take EVERYTHING out into the field.
Usually 2 duffel bags and a Medium Ruck. Which would be your go bag.

Still wouldn’t be “easy” to get to, as you generally laid your tarp in the rack, then the crew’s bags, then folded the exposed tarp over to cover the bags, then tied down.

Nope, the coax and loader MG are the M240, 7.62mm.
And the closest thing to a go bag would be your helmet bag, which usually held everything except your helmet.

Well that totally sucks. And I bet he still doesn’t qualify for a CIB! Basterds!
