I think Nightshift said it in one of his Videos, that he mixes his paints (for the basecoat for example: Dunkelgelb etc..) with a few drops of Satin Vanish to prevent the Color turning out to dark.
Is that true?? If so would that mean you dont need a Vanish after you are done with the Airbrush or do you still need a Vanish for the Decals or washes??
I’m asking this question because i do have the problem that my Models turn out a bit dark after i apply the Vanish.
i appreciate all help
He may very well do that. I’ve heard of guys adding clear coat to their paint to improve flow through the airbrush. However, after you shoot your color paint coats, you still need a gloss clear coat over them for your decals. This will darken the appearance of the color coats. After your decals are dry, you can then shoot a gloss flat coat, which will lighten the color coats and give you an acceptable appearance.
Many paints are really toothy out of the bottle. That means effects painting will lodge a lot of material in the underlying paint. If you use dark colors for effects painting, the resulting finish will darken a lot. A more satin paint means less tooth, less material deposited during effects painting, and a relatively lighter final result.
Adding any form of clear to a paint will also attenuate it, resulting in fewer pigment molecules per unit area. That could make the finished result lighter or darker depending on the underlying color.
It should also be noted that flat paints scatter more light than satin paints and satin paints scatter more light than gloss paints. This means a gloss paint will appear darker than a satin paint and a satin paint will appear darker than a matte paint, all other things being equal. Therefore, adding satin to matte paint will both darken it (less light scatter) and change pigment density.
In other words, as with all things paint, it is complicated.
