Thank you Phil… After using the foamboard, I have switched to using 3/16" think taskboard instead. I bought that at Dick Blick’s. It has a thin wood-type board on both sides of foam and it dosen’t warp with stains/paints applied. I will be using it till it’s gone.
As for the clay, remember to use up your supply before it hardens and becomes unusable. I had main in a plastic closed container, inside a plastic zip-lock bag, for about two years, and it hardened, becoming unusable to use. here’s a couple more pictures I took while building the diorama:
Sorry, I used pink foam insulation here instead of the taskboard the “Black” foam board isn’t good to use when it gets wet. I do use the taskboard mentioned above though.
It is foamboard Phil, but it can warp when you apply the DAS (air drying clay), especially if you only coat one side, so you have to try and brace the inside, so Rich’s ‘taskboard’ might be better.
I’ll keep an eye open Rich, and I’ll have to check out ‘taskboard’, not sure if we can get it here in the UK? Is it much heavier than the same sized sheet of foamboard?
Out of interest, and I apologise if you’ve already seen it, I did something similar using blue foam for the dock and foamboard for the building façades.
but what I got was the 18" x 24" size, ten sheets for $84 USD mine was brown wood on both sides
I don’t think it is still available at Amazon.
I will try to locate the taskboard, and post regarding that later. I know people who swear by it, not at it, LOL
OK, this is what I bought for use as a base, then added the pink, 1" foam insulation atop of it to make the “sandwich” for my dioramas. I now use the brown board, because I don’t have to paint it, especially if I want to simulate earth. It’s already the earthy color.
Gentlemen, it’s the middle of June and apparently it’s been six weeks since I’ve posted. I apologize. I’m trying to get time to put something on. I’ve decided instead of doing that Gas Works, I will do the blacksmith shop first. Then I’m going to move on to a resin kit.
Where have I been what am I doing? Here’s my excuse. We are moving from our place to the In-laws place, and trying to get our house on the market to sell while the housing market is insane. All of our time outside of work and doctors visits is being devoured by this ordeal. My poor wife is wearing herself out going through our stuff and her parents, throwing out what she doesn’t want, and then trying to get our stuff moved from our house. Me? I am the " Hired help" and have to mow the yards (takes 2 hours with a 44 inch deck riding mower) as well as working on the garden. Sometimes I don’t finish that until it gets too dark to see what I’m doing.
Well, boohoo for me but I really am trying to get back into this campaign. I’m loving what I’m seeing so far.
Rich, that’s a great diorama. That mill and barn is a feast for the eyes. I come back to look at it a couple of times and I keep finding something new. Beautiful work.
I will use the std. kit plus the add-on to build a structure that will have Erie characteristics but be unique to my railroad. This tower will be “ES”, East Shops, which controls the interlocking at the east end of Shops Yard.
Nothing spectacular. A simplified paint scheme and since winters on the shores of Lake Erie are such a joy, all BW structures have double entry’s into space that is occupied and heated. In this case I will add an enclosed area on the platform at the top of the steps. The lower entry into the equipment/furnace room will not be so equipped.
Extraordinary modeling. The grass on the shingles, the tendrils reaching out from the vine foliage and colonies of moss - you could present a clinic on ultra realistic flora. The level of detail of the structure, breathtaking.
