Red residue on photo etch

I am building Tamiya’s Cromwell. I busted started it and I decided to add eduards PE set (mainly for the mesh screens) to jazz it up. I am building up the smoke generators which are really well designed. The PE sheet has this strange red residue on it that I have never seen before

The PE set is quite old (1997), is it some kind of corrosion or oxidation? Do I need to clean it off before building? It is only on some of the PE and only in parts that seem to be made with some relief to them

Most likely just a little oxidation and some surface prep solution or light sanding should take care of it.

It looks like it’s only on partds that have been doubled etched, giving them extra detail.
Looks like a brass and copper composite where the brass heas been etched off.

Good call, this sounds likely the parts with the red are indeed ones that have extra detail like bolt heads or rivets
