Replacement putty

I think the gist of things is to have an arsenal of different use putties. I have Tamiya Grey, Bondo Glazing and Spot, Mr. Surfacer 500, and Deluxe Perfect Plastic Putty.

IMO they have similar properties and can do the same job, however I think they all have different jobs that they shine at.

  • Tamiya and Mr. Surfacer are hotter products to plastic (less forgiveness with mistakes). Pin marks, cast texture and stippling. No issues when washing model.
  • Bondo is more forgiving and cooler, with easier clean-up than Tamiya and Mr. Surfacer on plastic. Large pin marks, large gaps and extra strength bonding. No issue when washing model.
  • Deluxe very forgiving and didn’t exhibit any molecular change to plastic and reacted fine after quick washing model (Deluxe was cured and there were no large gaps). Small hard to reach pin marks, small gaps, for more detailed areas.

I want to try Aves Apoxie Sculpt. Some folks here say good things about it.

Quick question… does Bondo, Glazing and Spot have much shrinkage associated with it? I want to try it, but also want to understand it completely before trying it on a particular kit.

No, Bondo has no noticeable shrinkage.

Thank you, not sure why I didn’t know about Bondo… I am on the way to my local auto parts store NOW.

The air cure, one-part stuff in the tube will not cure correctly if applied too thick and does shrink. It should not be applied more than 1/16" layer at a time. Once preceeding layer(s) has cured then you can apply another layer over the top if needed and so on.

The Bondo Polyester Glazing in the can that requires a catalyst in a small tube that you purchase with it as a kit has no noticeable shrinkage (says, George Costanza ) This stuff can be applied much thicker if needed.
