RMP Patrol – Berlin August 1961

I sort of get that but when one thinks back, to say the thirties and forties, all those German colour pics - Agfa film (?) - Signal magazine, and then fast forward to 1961, zilch. I mean the only colour pics I can find re the August conflict are these:

All rather frustrating for the Cold War modeller.

Yes, the Germans put a lot of effort into their propaganda, in order to get the maximum effect from it.
Life magazine did the same thing for us.

IIRC, all colour photos you see in Signal have been coloured in, rather than printed from colour negatives.

Excellent job Brian. The black and white shots made me drag out an old copy of “Redcap” annual, from the TV series with a young John Thaw as Sgt Mann. The photos really have the look of the old pictures in the middle of the book from the 60’s, in fact they may well be the same photos used for reference, probably from “Soldier” magazine.

Glad you liked the model.

I remember the series well; I must have been about 10 when it hit the screen of our small TV; I was transfixed - it was often quite gritty stuff and I didn’t always understand the implications of the drama. I don’t think my parents approved of my watching it, but I assured them that as I was going to join the Army it was essential viewing.

This thread and subsequent build have been most enjoyable and educating!
My main focus on the Cold War was the revolutions that occurred during the 50’s and 60’s.

Thanks very much Ron - I’m glad it was of interest. The 50s and 60s were turbulent times - which all means uncharted waters for most modellers.

I do tend to focus on Europe and in particular those formations and units in NATO’s Central Region (and the opposition in East Germany), but this one was a little different. I just felt it was apposite to show not just the RMP Munga, but its environment which as we know, underwent an upheaval in August 1961.

Anyway, thanks again.

And I think you succeeded quite well.
I sort of got hung up on doing Sovjet tanks, depicting during the revolution they were deployed in. I have a T-62 in Prague '68, a IS-3 in Budapest '56 and a T-34/85 in Berlin '53.
And then I derailed and did a M60 in Dualtex and one in MASSTER.

Now that’s interesting and right up my street; I have a T-44 planned for Budapest, and like you, a T34/85 in Berlin - planned that is. I haven’ thought much about 1968, though the event seared itself in my memory (I was just 14).

I also have a plan to revamp my Grenztrabant with Valkyrie figures patrolling the IGB. Plans, plans; I need to actually do something about them(!)

Anyway, all good Cold War stuff Ron. Have you any pics of yours? The M60 in Dualtex would be very interesting.

That’s some very nice work Ron; I also like the way you display them with appropriate artefacts. Lovely work.

I’m a great fan of MASSTER and the Dualtex looks fantastic. Thanks for showing them.

Interesting times in 1961 - not often modelled. Anyway, glad you like - thanks very much.

The scene that i’m working on is this but with only Gen.Lee 35 and a scratchbuilt M59 plus an M38 but the work proceed very slowly due the difficult of the scene
