SAM-6 Battery

Can some of you who has build 1/35 trump SAM-6 share their input about this kit? Is it worth the pennies it’s fetching or is there a better option? TIA

It is one of their easier build kits with great fit. I haven’t started the tracks yet so can’t comment on that. The missiles need a little sanding along the seams but other than that I haven’t encountered any problems.

There is one thing I should mention, the missiles are the training type from what I have read. SP Designs have some nice upgrades. Also the photo etch grill on the rear hull is very thick.

Yes, the question is what you want to build. The vehicle out of the box has the roadwheels incorrectly spaced and the missiles are the training type (shorter and skinnier). SP Designs does make corrections. (I help Sergej, the owner, out in North America…I really need to get his stuff up on eBay…)

I wish you would. I always bought my SP Designs from you.

Thanks for your inputs guys. I am looking to make a nice representation of the SAM-6 to go along with 1/35 Russian 1591 SURN KUB Radar. From what I have read these two vehicles went together during any type of action.

Ok, so I will need to replace the wheels and the missiles to make them look accurate.

What else?

@JacquesD how can I get hold of those correct missiles?

TIA

I think the wheels are OK,
the problem is the spacing between them.
Trumpeter 1/35 kit:

The real thing:

Trumpeter 1/72 kit:

Note the difference in spacing for the first two axles.
I don’t know if this can be fixed by moving the axles (only the first two or all of them) or if there is an issue with the hull length.

Yes, the problem is the spacing of the roadwheels…this graphic was done by someone (I don’t remember who) back in 2009-ish to illustrate the issue. Sergej of SP Designs then modified kit parts and cast them to correct it:

I will be putting SP Designs stuff up for sale on eBay (in my current “store”) shortly. (The import, taxes, etc…stuff has really messed up getting items and supplies). I will try to remember to let you all know when that is done.

Here is a link to the SP Designs webpage showing the items. Because of tariffs on everything coming into the USA, if you buy direct from Sergej in Ukraine, you will get a customs fee (fair warning). This is why I have the USA sales point I am bringing back into use.

I’m in Sweden and we don’t punish imports from Ukraine and I don’t get to pay the exorbitant postage rates across the Atlantic either …

Mike,

You might consider buying the decals from HAD Models:

I bought mine couple of years ago from Ukraine.

I did also purchase the right missiles from Sergei(SP Designs) and will soon buy the correct hull.Sergei is a very nice person and it was a smooth transaction, so highly recommended!

And I need to check whether Trumpeter corrected the wrong wheel spacing in the Surn kit(my guess is they haven’t)…

Might need 2 corrected SA-6 hulls from Sergei…

Yes, it is painful and humiliating right now here in the USA…

Damn! Another kit to be re-done by Zvezda, next to the PT-76.:frowning:

Too cheap to be good!:frowning: :frowning: :frowning:

The lower hull sides are flat, right? If so, that looks like it would be reasonably easy to correct by sawing off all the wheel mounting points and relocating them.

The lower sides are NOT flat. It involves rather major surgery to do the work…again, this is not my work but the workaround that someone else did many years ago

Ah, yes, that makes it a lot more difficult to correct :frowning: You would probably need to slice up the hull and then glue it all back together with the right spacing, and do that square. Great fun …

Yes, this is why the work done by Sergej (SP Designs) is so nice. It fixes a time consuming error.

I did the check tonight:

In the upper part is SURN’s hull, at the bottom- SA-6’s hull.

Although I need to mount SA-6 suspension arms to be precize, both hulls are not identical. They were indeed different in real life- Object 568(SURN) vs. Object 578(SA-6).

Is SURN hull right?

Hard to say, but at least Trumpeter did not use the already available SA-6 hull.

Following up on the discussion earlier in this thread- today I ordered the corrected SA-6 hull from Sergej.

Communication went smoothly- as always.

I feel obliged to say- he is a great guy!
