Been following this and just blown away by it. Amazing. I’m sorry I didn’t get round to suggesting this primer before you sprayed the grey, but I did mean to mention it a while ago;
Looking forward to more updates.
Finished build. Photo heavy. Thanks for looking. I will do a small vignette if time permits with the figures.
Raphael,
That’s an absolute beauty! I love the contrast between the pink and all the green kit. I also still can’t get over the amount of detail you put into the little things (as I sit here with a stack of PE contemplating my life choices).
Well done sir!
This is a helluva piece Raphael- a testament to the time and skill you invested in it to get all those tiny parts looking just right. Everywhere you look there is something wonderful to see and your painting has complimented the detail of the build in great harmony. This is perhaps the finest rendition of this vehicle I’ve ever seen.
Top build!
Absolutely stunning work!! A real piece of art!
Thanks for sharing your work.
Raphael - love it; outstanding workmanship and attention to detail. 'Looking forward to seeing it with the figures as they will set it all in context.
Just one thing - and I really don’t mean to rain on your parade here - but please note that British Army ammo boxes are painted in Service Brown not olive green; see an example here (albeit blank ammo):
I’ve included this many shots as reference for others who may be modelling kits from this time span/theme (today’s colours may well have changed and I left the Army 8 years ago). Note that the proof label (orange sticker) is quite prominent.
'Probably too late to adjust on your model but you could possibly argue, that say were your Land Rover set in Oman early 70s, the ammo could have been purchased from perhaps Pakistan, or borrowed from Iranian forces who might, just might have utilised olive green containers.
Anyway, hope you don’t mind the comment.
Boots, thank you for pointing that out. I can still do correction as I design the GPMG to be removable and by doing so I can do a quick repaint. I didn’t really know as the photo to me looks drab but ist likely a lighting issue on the reference photo so I guess its an “honest” mistake on my side but hey we learn everyday. The only issue I have is I dont have proper yellow stencil as i don’t want to spend anything toward decals and hence this low cost build but I can accept that.
Thank you Canmedic, Karl, maartenboerma, SGTJkJ and Boots!
Brian is that just taking up space in your conservatory?
Well, the last thing I wanted was to cause you extra work hence my reasoning re the possible foreign suppliers. The thing is it would also mean repainting the stowed ammo as well and I really wouldn’t wish for you to have to revist that exquisite finish. The dust around the handles etc is perfect. I take your point about decals - it can all get rather expensive.
Correct Boots, I will left the middle section as it is, not really bothered and at least I know that its an error in my part, the GPMG I will definitely correct it as you pointed out. I enjoyed the build actually with all your help and input. I thank you for the help and advice.
My cousin is doing the same thing and it was pointed out to him that the smoke discharger cover is a mandatory black (I assumed its a hard rubber) and all the straps are black. I said to him it can be both as I saw pictures with both variations. Can you also confirm that this is the case?
Don, I just showed your comment to my wife, who replied “No, it’s taking up space in my conservatory”. Oo-er.
Well, you never know when you’ll need an ammo box full of used blank ammo!
I actually found it dumped on Salisbury Plain, the nearby training area, and took the lot home for my son. This was around 20 years or so ago and he was very interested the military (I wish he hadn’t been) I fashioned him a wooden machine gun with lifting top cover and he was as happy as Larry when playing “War” with his friends.
The smoke discharger covers are a a black rubber-like material in my dwindling memory, but that doesn’t mean they wouldn’t be painted over; a lot of kit stays on the vehicle when theres an urgent paint job required (see some of the equipments in the Gulf Wars). Also, bear in mind that the task is probably being undertaken by a soldier who doesn’t particularly want to be doing the job, so he may not do it that well!
I’m not too sure what straps you’re referring to; on just about all the equipment I can think of, tentage, specific weapon covers, valises, camp beds, rucksacks, the straps are mostly of a webbing material with protetced brass end-pieces in the same colour as the item they’re attached to.
My pleasure.
I see. So i guess the smoke discharger can be pink or black. Straps is for the jerry cans and tool straps as I also saw them painted in pink.
