Group Build Description: A 2025 campaign for all things Sherman. All scales, eras, users, as long as it’s based on the M4 Sherman.
Event Details: The Shermania 2024 campaign was a hit and several participants expressed a wish for another go. So here it is, another campaign for the classic American Sherman, the tank that won WWII (despite German tanks being better that 10 M4s, because we always had 11!) Any scale, any user, any era, as long as your model is based on the much-varied M4 Sherman.
(Remember to click “Going” if you want to join the build!)
A Note about Awards: The following text is a reminder that in order for people participating and finishing their projects to receive a badge on their forum profile, they will need to provide their account username to the group build leader by the completion date of the build. The leader will then provide this list to the site admin who will bulk award the badges to those users who have finished the group build. If you don’t provide your username or finish the project on the timetable the leader has setup you will not be able to receive an award.
It’s a heavy cart, probably purpose-made to carry the excavated Caterpillar D6A bulldozer (like the one in front) that’s on top of it. I guess they had Sherman wheels to spare, this being 1948
Might be tempted to actually build a Sherman tank, and complete it. Have several ideas running in my head:pleading_face:, several kits in the stash , and an uncompleted Sherman Mk IB…
FOUGHT at el ALAMEIN now pulls Britain’s largest PLOUGH
Does that refer to this fire-engine red ex-tank? Because if it does, then they swapped out a good deal of parts since it fought at El Alamein: heavy-duty bogies with packing pieces under the return rollers were not on tanks then, neither were this type of idler wheels, and I’m kind of doubtful about the final drive assembly — I don’t recall offhand any photos of tanks at El Alamein with other than the three-piece. This must be an M4A2 (Sherman III), though, judging by the remains of the glacis, so I guess the one-piece final drive housing could be original. The remains of the sand-shield mounting rail, though, also speaks against it being an El Alamein veteran, AFAIK.
Interesting that they kept the auxiliary generator, too. What would they need it for if the turret and radio are gone?
Convert it yourself? The hard part is the gun barrel, everything else is fairly straightforward: rectangular box on the turret rear, loader’s hatch that’s really just flat with a surround, etc.
OK, not quite The hard part is getting a tank you can convert. Looking at the 1:16 Shermans on Scalemates, pretty much your only option to build a British one would be combine the I Kit M4A1 (75 mm) with an M4A3 (76 mm) HVSS from either them or AHHQ, plus some scratchbuilding, to make a Mk. IC Hybrid. If you want to go for an American vehicle, it would be easier because you could just stick the bogies and turret from the M4A1 onto the M4A3.
