Shunsaku Tamiya tribute campaign

It was Gunze but either way that kit is a ‘63 and Tamiya is a ‘66 version. Also looking at the instructions suggests different plastic construction so it is fine to enter this one.

FYI, any vintage of Tamiya kit works if you want/need to change your mind.

When in high school with high school dreams, we thought about trying to put a Porsche engine in the Karman Ghia. Back then I don’t know if there would have been a huge difference in power.
Today, I would like to put the Porsche 2.4 L 6 cylinder into the Porsche 914. Back in the day it would have been basically a Porsche 916.

In my high school dreams, it was about putting other things into places they didn’t necessarily belong. A car did figure prominently into the plan though, it being able to transport us away from prying eyes and protect us somewhat from those cold Michigan winters.

Ah what you are describing would be best be called pre-deployment training.

My VW mechanic had a Ghia with a 300hp turbo-charged Porsche engine in it for drag racing. The early Porsche engines are basically the same as the VW engine built for performance rather than for ease of production.

I have this Tamiya Morgan I would like to join in with please.

Have been checking in and admiring the works in progress. This is a lovely kit and a great opportunity to start building it.

I was reading a bit last night into outer colours on UK Sherman’s and Wagons like the Achilles etc… the general consensus leaned to the vast majority being in basic OD as they came over from the states .. Tamiya calls out XF 61, which I don’t really like.

So, I bought a van of TS 5 OD, and rattle canned the hull tub sides, and all the parts for the running gear, which I will assemble later today … After that, I will be using AK OD, and then the AK faded OD in certain areas … That’s the plan anyhow… :+1:

Awesome classic car there Joe- what paint color are you thinking of?

From memory Tamiya OD is XF-62.

I would lean towards if the vehicle was not rebuilt, say such as being up gunned with a 17 Pounder, it would remain in US OD. But if the vehicle was rebuilt by having a new gun or other similar major modification, it would then be repainted into the SCC15 OD color at the completion of the rebuild.

Some of the subgroups done but not glued yet. Engine compartment, front suspension and floor of the driver’s compartment.

The great majority of the other parts are currently dunkelgelb. Debating about leaving it DG or going with the three-color camo scheme (thinking camo tho).

I was going to try and get the running gear put together… Fail…
I got them all off the sprue, and then cleaned up … 92 parts in all…

I will get them all together tomorrow…:+1:

Or you could go real deep into left field and paint it OD…

Hi Karl, I’ve always had a fondness for this car and if I were to own one for me it would have to be British racing Green.

Indeed Joe, it sure does look good on the one in the box art- best of luck with it!

Running gear was put together and fitted.

Each unit has 13 pieces !
And a test fit of the upper and lower hull.

Once I get a wash and filter on the fighting compartment it will tone the white right down.

Fantastic fit on everything so far.

That’s looking good. I might have to treat myself to this.

I haven’t managed any photos, but have made a little bit of work on the Panzer IV. Just tidying up parts ready for assembly. Surprised at how clean the moulding is with little flash considering the age.

Colours are still proving to be a bit of a headache. I found Migs RAL8000 and 7008 paints and did a test against the others. And again some difference in tone, although they are a bit closer to the AK.

Then to confuse matters further, I found a bottle of Vallejo’s Modelcolor RAL8000 in the paint box.

And no surprise that it’s different to their own Modelair RAL8000 I tried already! It’s madness I tell you!

Looking at the colours used on the Tank Museums Tiger, I am inclined to use the Vallejo colours. And then tone it down with dust and sand.

And they say this is supposed to be a stress free hobby.

Yes, I saw these field modification in various photos.

The project is actually on hold because:

  • I no longer have plastic cards and the delivery company decided to send my order all over France
  • the vinyl tracks has broken down, so I had to order a new set from Microcosmos

I have a general question: I’m looking to make handles between 2 and 1.5 mm wide. Do you use a specific tool?
