Presenting this very nice figure from my friend and talented sculptor Georgi Stamov (GS Minitures) from Bulgaria. A Spartan hoplite/commander in very dynamic pose, not seen often, around 4th century BC. After the first battle of Mantinea in 418 BC Spartan hoplites droped the linothorax armor and the corinthian helmet and starting wearing only a red cloak and pilos helmet.
Detail on the figure is fantastic and can’t wait to start the painting
I will try something different this time, mahogany basecoat with VMS No-peel primer (the best acrylic primer for me, with finish as smooth as Surfacer 1500, without the smell). I think bronze and flesh will be better over it, instead of black and white priming. Also red will be easier to apply on it.
Painting the red cloak, bronze and xiphos sword. I will enhance some highlights/shadows and will paint the lambda on the shield. Also AK Ultra matte on the clothing.
Some more details added, I painted the Lambda letter on the shield with custom mask and airbrush. Also I’m not sure I will do the pattern on the rim, maybe I will leave it only red
This is how it will look on the base, also the colors I used for the red painting. Scale75 artist for the cloak blending and highlights. Enhancing also the shield damage.
Honestly I like the pose, I find it dynamic like he is attacking towards the enemy, which is why he is leaning slightly forward. Too much static poses out there
