Star Trek 60

Weird!

There’s definitely some sort of quality control problem. Similar stories have been reported here and elsewhere. I remember somebody doing the Enterprise E reissue in the sci-fi campaign (I don’t recall who at the moment) and the decals were ok except for the life pods. They broke up! When I did a kitbash with the PL 1/1000 TOS Enterprise, most of the decals were ok except some of the larger pieces with the windows. They tended to break up.

What annoys me is that Round 2 have known about the issues with the decals for years, but have not changed printers.

I am surprised at the level of deafness at Round2 concerning their decals. Their auto kits are usually no better, and I do get a lot of breaking decals there since most of the muscle cars have racing stripes and such.

PITA

It’s inexcusable. Especially given the high costs of some of their kits.

Back when Hornby bought Airfix, they changed their decal supplier. They came on brown backing paper, were very thin and tended to crack (I might still have a few of them lurking in my decal bank). They were also sometimes reluctant to come off the backing. Airfix and Hornby were quite rightly criticised for these in the modeling reviews and customer complaints. They listened and in response, Hornby very quickly changed supplier. They’ve been using Cartograf for years and they’re flawless. It’s an easy problem for a kit maker to solve, but they just won’t.

Ah…It’ll be built as the original. I’ve not really been a fan of any of the off-shoot ST shows.

Thanks for the heads up on the decal issue. I still have a partial can of the old Testors decal spray that I’ll use to hopefully keep the decals from splitting.

Happy to help. Hopefully the clear coat should help.

Really need to do that myself on the ones I have.

Would ‘it has warp engines’ be enough to meet the Star Trek design aesthetic?

For example, could I build a very angular ship, stick on some warp engines, and call it Star Trek?

I would think it would need to be canon.

There have been a few angular ships. The Prometheus seen in Voyager springs to mind.

Alien designs can sometimes be a bit more brutalist in design than the more elegant Federation ships. So yeah go for it. Interesting to see what you come up with!

Warp drives aren’t a Star Trek invention so that alone doesn’t make it ST.

But phantom is the boss here; if it was mine it would be a “no”, unfortunately.

I think we’d have to see the components and how it would go together.

There is a bit of a strict design philosophy as far as the Federation Starfleet, but alien designs did break with that convention and the shows designers let their imaginations run wilder. Take the Klingon Bird of Prey, no conventional nacelles. Instead the wings are the warp-field generators. Same with the Cardassian Galore. So I’m willing to allow some freedom with alien ship design. Think about some of the species we see, particularly in early Trek, where we never see their ships. The Gorn for example. What would a Gorn ship in the movie or Next Gen era look like? I don’t think we even got a proper look in TOS, certainly not in the original version of the episode anyway.

If one were to take into account the various games based on the franchise, like Star Fleet Battles, we do get the Gorn, as well as the Kzinti shown in the animated series (which were actually created by author Larry Niven). Other designs were created to fill in gaps. The FASA rpg had whole manuals dedicated to the ships of each major race.

Some of them wouldn’t be that hard to scratch; angular brings to mind the Tholians.

The Gorn are major antagonists in the current Star Trek universe. If you include computer games, there are at least a dozen different looks for Gorn vessels.

Across all versions of Star Trek–television, movies, games, video games, comic books–there are well over a thousand different vessels to pick from. The shapes vary dramatically.

That is why I asked. This sounds more like an original series and movies campaign.

The description says any of the series and/or movies so it doesn’t seem confined to TOS but it would the campaign leader’s discretion to include related media.

Not that I currently have anything on-hand other than Round2/Polar Lights stuff anyway.

Ok, I think some clarification is needed.

The campaign is for ANY Star Trek ship from TOS, movies, TNG, DS9, VOY or any of the recent reboot film or TV shows. I’ll also include designs from computer, roleplay or table top games. Those are something I don’t know much about personally, so was totally unaware of them covering the Gorn. If anyone wants to build something from those or draw inspiration from them, go for it! It’ll be good to see. What I mean by the Star Trek aesthetic, is that it should look like it belongs in the Star Trek universe. ie, warp nacelles on an Imp Star Destroyer, Battlestar or WW2 battleship wouldn’t look right.

My comment about Gorn ships was an example about the absence of on-screen presence in the originals (the first that popped into my head). Besides from Kirk fighting the Gorn captain, you don’t really see their ship. Don’t recall them ever coming up again in TNG etc. Hence me throwing the idea out about what would they look like in those shows? I know about them coming back in the new shows, but I haven’t seen them. Strange New Worlds has only recently made it to the UK and it’s been stuck in the graveyard slot on Sunday night. Unfortunately, I can’t get Paramount streaming up on any of my equipment, so I’m far behind on it all.

Hope that helps. Any questions, please ask.

Thank you for the clarification. :slightly_smiling_face:

A walk down memory lane for those curious where I may go with this campaign.

I had that Gorn heavy cruiser but your paint job is far more inventive than my dull dark gray scheme. Unfortunately I no longer have any of my FASA/SFB minis but I still have the five ships from the Star Fleet manual made from plastic that Gamescience put out years earlier. Still have to apply the decals but they are so frickin’ tiny.

No worries, happy to help.

Cool miniatures. Good looking colour schemes on them.
