No, there were not.
Hello Dan,
What was your MOS? Aside from having one of the ugliest patches in the Army, the 24th was a powerful division. Y’all were under the 18th Airborne Corp as I recall…
Happy Veteran’s Day!
Allen
Hello Reynier,
Excellent! A brother Grunt! I was an 11B also for 20 years, plus 2 years as a 19E. We’re you on ITV’s? They were big news when our battalion got them in Germany. I was with the 3D AD then.
Happy Veteran’s Day!
Allen
Hello Ken,
Good question and good answers directly from the 24th, too. On the other hand, I have read that there were at least two (2) A3’s assigned to the USMC during the 1st Gulf war so that their thermal sights could be used to advantage.
Happy Veteran’s Day!
Allen
There was one Bn’s worth of US Army M60A3 TTS tanks loaned to the USMC during ODS. The USMC spread them across their M60A1 Bns to give them all some improved night capability.

Just to clarify. I was not a grunt. I was a supply clerk with the unit. But I learned to use everything the unit had, including the ITV.
After o got out, I reclassed as an MP.
Hell Gino,
I had no idea that it was near that many. Fifty four (54) was a significant number.
Happy Veteran’s Day!
Allen
Nothing wrong with that. Supply/logistics is what keeps everything working. Just ask the Russians .
Ken
Being only an Army E-7 19E, no Army units had any M60A3s with ERA. With that said, I’m sure that where were one or two Army M60A1 or M60A3 with ERAs floating around Fort Knox for evaluation purposes only, but no Army Active, Reserve or Guard unit ever had one. By the late 1980s, the M60s days were numbered in the Army, even the thought of the early 1980s “Super 60” upgrades was only being looked at as an export upgrade kit
As for the Army’s ugliest Active Duty Division patches it goes to the 5th Infantry (Mech) Division and the 6th Infantry (Light) Division hands down!
Hey now, at 5th ID we didn’t have an ugly unit patch. We just had a boring/simple patch. A red four sided diamond for full color, and in black for subdued. I don’t think any divisions had an ugly patch, But some were certainly more interesting than others.
Hello Bergen,
I thought that E7 was pretty high on a scale 1-9. Unless, E1 is the highest…
Pray tell, which of the many SSI adorned thy raiment? Whatever it was, good sir, surely it better looking than the 24th or even the Fifth ID for matter.
With respects to your rank and service, I tend to agree with you regarding M60A3’s with ERA and issuance to US Army units. All seem to agree that they were issued to the USMC and I got that.
On the other hand, questions do remain, to wit:
-How many M60A3’s did the US Army equip with ERA or at least the brackets to mount the tiles on? If more than a couple, where were they stored during their existence?
-Who, what, when, where why and how did these M60A3’s wind up at Fort Hood?
Now, I can certainly answer some of these, but, not all definitively.
How many?-There were at least six (6) in the hard target “grave yard” at Fort Hood at the time I was there.*
Who-The US Government.
What-M60A3 MBT’s equipped with mounting brackets for ERA in US Army markings.
When-I don’t recall at this time.**
Where-Fort Hood, Texas.
Why-Training usage as hard targets.
How-Road and likely rail transportation.
*-I think that the number was higher.
**-Believed to be circa 1995.
Gentlemen, this is indeed a cold case wrapped in an enigma and well, other stuff. The victims are presumed deceased and disposed of. Yet, one does remain. The Pristine M60A3 with a full array of ERA and US Army markings that sits upon the grass in front of Phantom Corp Headquarters.
Perhaps one can find definitive answers there.
Lol and much respect to all,
Allen
Doggone it Carlos,
To think that I have so much respect for expertise, with you being a retired cop and all. Certainly, none would question the inherent honor of any patch born upon the shoulder of a military man or his beast.
You are correct, the 5ID patch did not get selected as the all time ugliest active duty patch. It was too far down the list to even be considered. It’s science.
Lol,
Allen
Sprue Brothers has a shipment come in of the all three types. Plus they have two separate track types kits for sale also if you need just tracks.
Oh man they are reasonably priced too! Too bad I will be out of town for a while and not able to collect my mail or I would order one M48A5 right now
The USPS has/had a service to hold mail when out of town or you can have neighbor/friend pick up for you.
An example of modeling teamwork!
Bravo Sir!
Maybe I’ll look into that! I’ve wanted a M48A5 for a while! Don’t want to miss out on this one
HTH
You could send it to me and I’ll hold it for you.
