Tamiya Extra Thin dark green cap alternative?

I know about Tamiya Extra Thin Quick Set (light green cap) being the same as Tamiya Airbrush Cleaner and Mr Tool Cleaner, but is there a similar cheap large-volume equivalent for the dark-green cap stuff?

It might helpful to check this post: https://forums.kitmaker.net/t/recipe-for-sprue-goo/58354/8. The solvents mentioned in it, are “cheap” alternatives for Tamiya extra thin.

I remember that thread! But it still gets me no nearer to a cheap “volume” source of dark green cap equivalent. Last thing I want is to go all Breaking Bad with a chem lab in the shed…

Noob question:
What does the stuff in the container capped by the dark green cap do?
Thicker “glue”? Lube? Paint remover? Perfume? Laxative?

Never tried it as a laxative! So far I only use it as glue, the way the label states. It’s “slower” than the Quick Set, but still a liquid glue without fillers. I wish it came in bigger bottles, at a cheaper cost per ml…

Tamiya 87236?
Contains Bis(2-ethoxyethyl) ether
Probably mixed with some other stuff to dilute it.
The high purity stuff is expensive, over ÂŁ100 per liter.
I don’t know if this company sells to “civilians” or only to labs, schools, industry and such:
https://techmate.co.uk/product/diethylene-glycol-1-l-plastic/?srsltid=AfmBOoq2VCdCPa6miWwIDQJMLAyeYLAekOHRgxahg_3i4JdYDmyTvh3_

More chemical names listed in this patent.

If it was me I would adapt my work process to handle the speed of the stuff in the
bottle with the light green cap.
Jiggling parts around is done before applying solvent.
If parts are difficult to hold in position before applying solvent I try to solve that problem first.

@Uncle-Heavy the chemical you have referenced in your link is not bis(2-ethoxylethyl) ether. It is an (di)alcohol and therefore not very suitable for glueing polystyrene. Apparently, @barkingdigger seems after the slow evaporation rate of the Tamiya glue. Indeed, MEK, toluene and ethyl acetate are way faster.

When searching for chemicals it is very, very easy to get confused by all the different names for the same stuff. Some additional information is from Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diethylene_glycol_diethyl_ether . When in doubt look for the CAS number (112-36-7). Sigma Aldrich offers 1L at £136. This high quality stuff and, therefore, expensive. Technical grade is sufficient for glueing. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to find a UK supplier who offers that. Maybe you ( @barkingdigger ) have better searching skills.

Given how fast the other thread about Quick Set found alternative products, I guess there just isn’t one for the standard Extra Thin. Otherwise somebody would have found it already! Oh well, thanks everyone for trying!

I read from this product data sheet

I did miss the acetate (3%) though, it might be these 3% that provide the styrenesolving …

I suspect Googles farking AI which always inserts itself in all searches misdirected me to the methyl variant:

I HATE that AI but I keep forgetting to include -AI (minus AI) in my searches

Go into your browser settings and create a new search engine entry, with the URL for the search engine as:

https:// www. google. com /search?q=%s&udm=14

(take the spaces out; they were necessary to stop the forums from treating it as a URL)

Make this your default search engine, and it will give you just the AI-free results when you put a search term into the browser’s search box.
