Up- Detailing the 1/16th. Sd.Kfz. 251 from Das Werk

Was also realizing the potential for further releases and/or conversion aftermarket to make the numerous versions of the 251. Stuka Zu Fuss comes to mind.

Or a fully kitted 251/6. Now I’d love one of those.

Very clever to keep the sprue on that back plate until it’s cemented in place !

Great tip on putting the body together, I’ve seen a few posts where the builder has had issues, I’ll follow your example Donald.

Makes me want to see the unedited version of Andy from Andy’s Hobby HQ’s build video.

He and a few other guys seem to just build away and act like there are no problems that everyone else seems to encounter. How can that be?

That’s to get you to buy.
I’m telling you all what I find and I have nothing to gain if you buy the kits.
There are a few fit issues , i’ll tell you about them when I get them figured out.

Did I miss something or did he omit the radio in that video? I was looking for comments about all the accessories missing from it.

Hey David the Radio is seen in Pic.#81 I’m still adding some of the missing accessories , More detailed Fire Extinguishers , Mg.34 Ammo Drums and their storage racks 4 total, the new seats are in there already . New Headlight and radio antenna , there’s a lot to go yet.

Going by the AFV junction box the antenna mount looks to be about 50% of the size it should be and has no internal section to mount the said box to. I have no reason to think AFV have the size wrong… Go figure. LOL (currently scratching a new part something more resembling the real item

A large Gap

Not a really good fit on the bottom of the rear plate.

I lowered the Fire extinguishers to fit the AMMO Drum Racks

I’ll be touching up the paint once assembly is finished.

Thank you but I said “video”. I’m referring to the video from Andy’s Hobby HQ.

Kornbeef: The Germans had two sizes of antenna mount, so before saying it’s too small we should be sure of which one it’s meant to be.

Yes I know David. Comparing the Tiger and the Pzr III kit components the mount is much larger. I sized the antenna mount using David Parkers Junction box (by Mk 1 eyeball) and lo and behold the Pzr III/Stug one is a perfect size. the kit supplied part is half the size.

Theres a few discrepancies but it shines compared to the Trumpeter offering in almost all aspects.

This is a most excellent build and a top drawer thread showing the progress and comparisons with after market parts. Really very well done!

Now a little fit problem easily fixed.

You will notice the rear doors are square on the corners, the question is why did the kit manufacturer put rounded corners on the rear door openings.
It makes you wonder if ANDY actually built this kit or not ?

Also the opening is about 1/2mm short height wise , You can trim the doors or trim the opening. I trimmed the opening as the corners needed to be squared off.

Hello, I have been following along with this build as I’m slowly working on one of these halftracks as well. I did some test fitting of the rear door parts on my kit as well as a little googling and found out the parts D16 and D17 should sit proud of part D13. The bottom outer corners of the doors (D16 and D17) should rest over the rounded corners on the bottom opening on D13. It seems Das Werk molded the opening for the hinges on D13 too deep allowing the hinge portion on the doors (D16 and D17) to sink in too deep giving the impression the doors should be a flush fit. Your kit is looking great!

Thank you,
R.J.

You are correct I found this Pic. on the net.
It shows the doors fitting on the outside of the rear armor plates.
If you placed the kit doors like this there would be a gap in the middle.
I plan on displaying the doors in the open position.
If you wanted them closed like this you would have to scratch build new ones.
But the hinges would still be in the way.

Now for the Wheels and Track.
I painted the Wheels and tires while they were on their Sprue , easier to handle.

I assembled the kit front wheels to show how they go together , I’m not using them as I have a detailed pair from AFV Model

There are extra Road Wheels that may be used as spares

The inner pair of Wheels are tricky to get to line up with each other.

For the track I clipped it together in groups of 10 it’s easier to handle that way.
Just Clip together insert Track Pad and glue along back edge.

Next to paint and weather them.
