The Irish can join the British military? Weren’t they neutral in WWII?

Northern Ireland remained part of the UK after the establishment of the Republic in 1922. Northern Irish people still consider themselves Irish, so yes they cold be in the British military.

(My own Irish great-grandfather worked at Harland & Wolf in Belfast, and worked to help build Titanic. There’s no proof that his work sank it… )

While Ireland was neutral a lot of Irishmen from the Republic joined the British forces at the outset and during WW2. The subject of the film is Brendan ‘Paddy’ Finucane from Dublin. Plenty of Irishmen living in Commonwealth countries and the US also served in their forces. Lots went to mainland UK to work in the various wartime occupations too. Hell, some Irish even fought for the Germans!

@barkingdigger - my own Great Grandfather worked on the Titanic too!

Thanks, it seemed from the trailer that he wasn’t encouraged from his family.

Service in the British forces during WW2 could sometimes have been frowned upon, so its interesting they are including that aspect.
