The other issue with it was the top-heavy combo on such a narrow hull/suspension. But the real killer as you say was that the top brass calculated they did not need the complication of yet another tank - the Germans were already running out of tanks and were losing the war. Existing tanks might not have been the most advanced or well-protected, but there were enough to win by sheer weight of numbers. Of course the crews in the firing line might beg to differ…
