Uss langley cv-1

This may have been done before, I know the AV-3 has been.

I was looking in stash after the sort of cruiser fest for something different, and pulled this out. It is of course the trumpeter kit, with the trumpter upgrade etch and wood deck. I also have the Eduard set for the safety nets,

The Kit.

The box is full to the brim, with 18 sprues, a hull deck sections a full length flight deck and several etched frets, incuding some for the aircraft.

And the etch.

Keel laying sometime next week.

One question, I am certain there are a number of shipmates on this site who know an awful lot about this fine ship than I do. scouring my limited references on this ship, and the internet, it appears from some photographs that the fo’c’sle and poop decks had a wood cladding, there is no detial for this on the relevent deck parts.

Any assistance would be welcome.

Cheers,

Si

A bit of progress on the hull.

The main deck, poop and fo’c’s’le decks fixed down.

All the mooring bits and fairleads fitted to the fo’c’s’le and maindeck.

The Hull painted, paint needs to be applied to the decks next.

One slight quandry I have is the poop and fo’c’s’le deck, were they clad in wood, or painted steel. There is one photo on Navsource that depicts crew members holystoning the deck, it would appear to be the fo’c’s’le, but I am not 100% sure.

As I don’t seeem to be able to find a wood deck set for the Langley in her CV1 days that includes much more than the flight deck, even Artworx, they do include parts fort he ships boats.

I am minded to paint those decks a light tan colour, and the maindeck a darkish grey.

Any comments would be welcome.

Some more progress.

The trunked folding funnels assembled and test fitted.

The decks painted.

The lower section of the forward superstructure assembled and test fitted.

The aft superstruture under way, and test fitted.

An overview, so far construction has been straight forward, no real issues with fit.

Next bit in the plan upper deck of the forward superstructure, get a few more sub asseblies built, then spraying time.

Some small progress since the last update, All the other structural bits added to the after superstructure and sprayed light grey.

All the fittings added to the foc’s’le deck.

Next job will be painting in the decks on the superstructure build the few sub assemblies and some aircraft and then on with the etched framework for the deck .

An overveiw of the build so far.

I know one shouldn’t use a model as a reference, but at $5,970 for a 1/144th scale model of the Langley, let’s hope the research team at Modelshipmaster has done its homework…

Thank you for posting, that looks a very nice model, for that price I hope their researh was spot on. Mind I don’t think Mrs Duster would be very pleased with me if I bought it. It has not been the easiest ship to research on line, some good photos on Navsource, but very little on board detail.

Some progess since the last update.

Details attached to the after superstructure, and decks painterd

All the etch for structure prepped and ready for use.

This afternoon I bit the bullet and started on the structure supporting the flight deck.

.

I am going to work on this one transverse box secton at a time, test fit into place and let the glue cure. Thinking of it, like that it is less daunting…

More soon.

Looking great!! The specific model is very underrated, it is very impressive with all the details under the flight deck, all of the versions available. :+1: :+1:

Thank you for looking in, and your kind comments. There was a certain amount of whinging about the solid plastic support structure for the flight deck when the kit was first released. I will be honest, without an upgrade set it is highly unlikely I would have bought one. She is such a unique ship, and I do have a soft spot for the early carriers.

Great work Si,
and I full agree with Nikos here - the amount of detail under the flight deck sure is impressive! And I have to agree with you, without all that outstanding brass it would certainly lack something.
Another find build on your shipyard, great to watch her grow!

Hi Jan, Welcome aboard.

Thanks for looking in, and your kind comments. There is a lot going under the floght deck, apart from all the etched structure, there a couple of boats to go on, cranes to move aircraft parked on the hatch covers too and from the elevator and a few other bits peices.

Need to tackle some the tiny biplanes soon.

Hi Rory.

Thnaks for looking, much appreciated, So far so good. The main plan is not get complacent, slow and careful is the plan. It helps that the Trumpy etch handles very well. I hope to get bit further next weekend.

Cheers. Si

A bit more progress this weekend. Looking at photographs of the real thing Aircaft were stowed on the hatch coamings, better get on with the airwing. And they are some task so far one F4B ready for paint, a second on the way and a T4M started.

Section No.3 underway, I thought build them up in situ might help to ensure they fitted, and it seems to be working.

Two more sections done.

The next section will take the structure up to the elevator, so I can the travelling crane fitted that moves aircraft for and aft along the deck.

More soon.

Cheers, Si

This was indeed a wacky looking ship with all those girders - I’m enjoying watching it come together!
