For my next project I have delved deep into the stash and come up with this: Trumpeters 1/350 scale USS Texas 
I will be building her pretty much OOB except for turned barrels and whatever I scratch build or salvage from my PE Spares bin
The plate lines are enormous and massively overscale. I am going to sand these down a lot.
And this is how far I have gotten so far, hull is glued together.

I’m glad you plan to do something about that exaggerated hull plating… Trumpeter made it look as if the ship were made of giant Lego bricks!
I’ll be following this thread. The Texas has been on my “I should get that” list for a long time.
Is this the same Texas that was getting refurb’ed recently ?
Yes, the other USS Texas is a active attack sub.
I have sanded down the hull to a point I am happy with. I’ve not sanded it completely smooth. I think I’ve done it enough to leave a hint of hull plating once there is paint on.
Lets talk about camouflage for Texas as I am undecided on what I want to go with.
There is Measure 21 which as far as I can tell is what she was in during her famous Normandy Bombardment. This feels very appropriate for her.
Then there is the classic measure 22 which most people are familiar seeing her in.
But I am also partial to the idea of doing her in her current scheme which is a variant of Measure 22. Biggest change being the all black lower hull.
Thoughts?
If you do the current scheme will you add the torpedo bulges? I’ve seen it in Galveston and thought of doing it myself. They shouldn’t be too hard.

I do have a liking for the WW1 dreadnoughts that were modernised to varying degrees to fight in WW2. I will be following along with much interest.

I personally like the Measure 21 as she was painted during D-day. That was one of her biggest
moments in the war.
Why did they paint the hull black? Is it just a better anti-corrosion paint?
According to the USS Texas foundation, it was a cost saving decision. No one will see the lower hull and apparently the red anti-fouling paint was not readily available.

The black lower hull variation does look interesting…. It would draw the eye and give a different look.

Hi Rory, I like your idea of doing up the Texas as she is today as a museum ship. Keeps things interesting!
I did the same with Revell Massachusetts as a museum with the waterline painted much lower than in service and a bunch of civilian visitors aboard too.

Ah, yes, the infamous Trumpeter hull plating: not the only ship that they’ve decorated in this manor
