Was surprised to see two WW2 tanks while watching the year two season finale of the TV series “Paradise”. We kind of got to see two Sherman tanks on the show! I’m pretty sure this M4A1 is not a prop but a real tank.
The CDP tracks is a dead giveaway for a Canadian Grizzly. I know the Grizzly never saw combat in WW2 but it’s still a vintage WW2 tank that was built during the war. I don’t know how I feel about one of them getting cut up like that to make a movie prop Panzer 4 out of it. I just think that there are loads and loads of surplus modern AFVs that might’ve made a better starting point for a Panzer 4 movie prop. They attached cheesy fake “wheel hubs” to the front sprockets to replicate the look of the Panzer 4 sprocket but they didn’t add the teeth. It’s just a weird looking thing, in the rear you can see the air filters and on the sides they used the skirts to hide the bogies as best as they could. it wouldn’t surprise me if the turret doesn’t even move.
As for the show, it’s a standard post apocalyptic variety with US president intrigue mixed in, it took me two episodes to get into it but the last half of season one might be some of the best writing I’ve seen in a TV show yet, I was on the edge of my seat for those last 4 episodes. Lot’s of plot twists and some cool historical fiction mixed about the Cuban missile crisis. On account of those four episodes I’ll probably end up finishing the series which wraps up in season three, no more seasons will be made. This second season was okay but not as good as season one, but the last season should be good, looking forward to seeing the tanks more in season 3
I just realized both of these tanks are Canadian Grizzly tanks. The top one threw me off on account of the American style tracks but everything else is consistent with the Grizzly and the blanket box is a real giveaway.
I watch the show and was floored when the ersatz Panzer 4 showed up. Then there was that weird collection of vehicles with the Sherman, a piranha and what looked to me like a M75 personnel carrier. I liked the show but introducing time travel at this late date seems ill-advised. Of course, that might explain where they got a panzer and Sherman.
For post-war tanks. As originally produced, they had regular Sherman tracks, but the CDP ones were fitted shortly after the war and are the easiest recognition feature of most surviving Grizzlies.
Why does that tank have extra headlights on its mudguard, though?
I guess the one with American style tracks wasn’t modified post war, but it has the rest of the grizzly features the 3 piece FDA combined with the late turret and the blanket box on the back of the turret too.
It could also be that it was modified back when the CDP tracks wore out. American tracks and sprocket rings would be easier to get in most places than CDP ones, after all.
The blanket box on the back of the TV tank is not the standard shape for that on a Grizzly. Could be somebody cut it down at an angle and put on a new lid, though, but my guess is that it’s a totally different one.
Those Canadian Dry Pin tracks look more “German” than the standard US T tracks any day of the week. Those Sherman conversions look pretty damn good aside from the bogies. And covered up with Schurzen? Sweet! Much better than so many old war movies using a standard US tank (M4A3E8, M24, M41, M47, M48, etc.) with nothing more than a German style paint job and maybe a double baffle muzzle brake added to the main gun.
