What Are Your Favorite Five Best Of All Time War Movies?

5? Cajun math? Eh. I’m half “slow Cajun” (Quebcois, French Canuck, Snow back… ) My kinfolk missed the boat to Louisiana. Bruce Daigrepont: Acadie À La Louisiane (Acadia To Louisiana) (youtube.com)

The Bedford Incident; absolutely-bloody-terrifying, or at least when I watched it in the guardroom as a young 16-year-old; I was slowly but surely, becoming aware of the ramifications of the Cold War and this film just reinforced that sort of, well, latent terror.

I didn’t know then that that, would endure for the next 20-odd years or so

I agree wholeheartedly with your first paragraph lol!
I try to be selective when choosing Brit stuff to watch but find it much easier to sort through the crap on American tv since there’s a boat load of it. I’m especially drawn to the British police/ detective shows, mysteries etc., as they seem to have less macho crap and are more thoughtful. Some of the twists and turns are amazing. I love the comedies too mainly due to the difference sense of humor. ( I’m naturally a very curious person to begin with and have also watched some Swedish produced shows ).

Speaking of Brit shows, “Foyle’s War” was a very good series about crime on the home front during WWII.

While we’re on the subject of something good to watch, I would try “Dark Hearts”; it’s a French series originally titled “Coeurs Noirs”. I understand that “Noir” translates as “black” but these days the BBC bursts into tears if it encounters the word black.

Anyway; set in and around Mosul in 2016, and consist of a small French special forces detachment taking the fight to ISIS. There’s an actual story that one can follow, the military stuff looks pretty good (not that I know much about French SF, or even Brit SF come to that). The layers of command and control are well shown, including the 3000 mile screwdriver. Also HUMINT, IMINT in spades.

Do French SF actually employ female snipers? I have no idea but it doesn’t detract. Subtitles? Of course, unless your French is up to it, but I find subtitles means one ends up more immersed in the film, as one has to concentrate just that little bit more perhaps.

No social/diversity/sexual/equality/moral preaching which seems to pervade most Brit stuff these days (which begs the question what the wretched BBC are doing with it?)

As I say, great story, (an actual plot) good characters, and most satisfyingly of all, targets do indeed fall when hit.

Available in the UK courtesy of the Brit BBC iPlayer set up. God knows how anyone else will find it, but highly recommended. The best thing I watched in 2023 – which sadly says a lot about British TV – or more likely, a lot about me!

Enjoy.

It’s also available on Amazon Prime Video (in France at least…)

AFAIK there are no female sniper in the French SF…

H.P.

Well, still a cracking series; I’ve watched it 3 times, and might even give it another go (I probably need to get out more).

I’ll have to check it out, thanks for the heads up Brian.

Anerican tv is worse lol don’t feel bad!

I just started watching “Commandments “ which is about 3 Orthodox Jewish guys who serve in the IDF. Very interesting so far although I’ve only gotten 30 minutes in.

LOL. Yep. I spent 4 years in the air force between 1980-84. So I know what you mean.

Not a war film as such, but a film about the consequences of nuclear war: On the Beach. I think it’s the only big movie where EVERYONE dies! I couldn’t hear “Waltzing Matilda” for some years afterwards without feeling miserable…

Bedford Incident is loosely based (or on hell of a coincidence) on historical fact. Мир благодарит Вас, вице-адмирал Василий Александрович Архипов! Soviet submarine B-59 - Wikipedia Makes one wonder about the background for FailSafe.

Today I have seen the directors cut of the movie. Nice to see " our german guy " Heros von Borcke in the movie, bringing Jackson the gift from Stuart, the uniform. The hour more did’nt make it a different movie, I think. The only real new is the John Wilkes-Booth part

Yes, we can. I just watched it again last night for about the fifteenth time. Well paced, pretty good plot, if not just a tad implausible, and great acting by Charles Durning. The twist at the end is the best, but Charlie sort of gave it away the very first time I watched it.
