I had never heard of this movie. Looking it up, it sounds quite interesting.

Definitely some good acting.

Jon Finch did serve in the SAS Reserve Regiment and turned down the role of Doyle in “The Professionals” which went to Martin Shaw, who’d played Banquo to Finch’s Macbeth in the Polanski movie. He also turned down James Bond and it went to Roger Moore. His health declined, which caused him to be replaced by John Hurt as Kane in Alien, he had to give up being a racing driver and he rarely took on a leading role after that time. He pretty much disappeared from the big screen, his last appearance being a small role as the Patriarch Heraclius of Jerusalem in Kingdom of Heaven.

M

Finch certainly has the look for Bond, as written by Fleming.

I’ve seen parts of it… never could get into that movie. Like 84 Charlie MoPic… had army buddies who loved both of those. I just never got into either movie.

Just watched Guy Ritchies’ “The Covenant” with Jake Gyllenhaal streaming on Prime . . this is a dynamic edge of your seat story set in the Afghan war about a daring rescue and a commitment to repay the debt, so . . . this one deserves to be in the top 5 of my list along with The Outpost and Lone Survivor.

Well if you divide it that way…
French and Indian Wars?
American Revolution?
Mexican American War?
American Civil War?
Anglo Zulu War?
Boer War?
The Great War?
Russian Civil War?
Spanish Civil War?
Korean War?
Various wars involving Israel?
Grenada?
Of course there are many others, but I don’t know if there were movies made.

Sword-and-Sandal:

Love it or Hate it, pretty much anyone who knows what they’re talking about says the Battle of Gaugamela is the best depiction of classical warfare EVER. It should be with Robin Lane-Fox on hand, and participating as one of the Companion Cavalry!
Honourable mention for “Gladiator” for the battle at the start despite the Ancient Germans chanting in isiZulu and the “Sh1t-up-to-the-eyeballs” depiction of the Romans (they generally dressed up for the occasion, plumes worn, shield covers removed, and the artillery painted up like a fairground roundabout).
Similarly, the 1944 version of “Henry V” had the more accurate depiction of equipment (and the battle in general) while the 1989 movie overplayed the “Our gayness and our gilt are all besmirch’d With rainy marching in the painful field”.

“Northwest Passage”. Made in 1940, but well worth a look. Based on the first of the two books comprising the novel of the same, it doesn’t actually feature the search for the Northwest Passage which was in the second book…
The Last of the Mohicans (1992): excellent.

Cheers,

M

It’s so intresting you should post this @18bravo, I was thinking this is the only way I could narrow down my “Top 5” selection there’s just too many war movies out there . . you missed the Indian Wars from the Wild Wild West though, and Grenada (Clint Eastwood) and Panama . . . :slightly_smiling_face:

You can’t beat Shakespeare for the right words sometimes:

“With rainy marching in the painful field”.

Doesn’t that just sum up nearly every annual fitness test you’ve ever taken, Gore-Tex not yet invented (in my case), rifles seemingly doubled in weight, feet on fire and boots rubbing, what I call “the pull of sodden web” (personal equipment also getting heavier due to the rain), and the rain running off your helmet either down the nape of your neck or somehow the front.

For the Brits the venue is likely to be either Salisbury Plain or say, Sennelager; Catterick also, and all for a shilling a day (I paraphrase obviously!)

I just finished this fictional WW2 four-episode series and it was excellent…very cleverly written, directed, acted, and told. I highly recommend watching it on NETFLIX.
