Would people like a 2025 version of this? Are there enough train guys to do something trainish/railish every year? I hope to get something done this year still, but I have a lot of train subjects, and intend to keep working on them. It’s clear now that i overcommitted for this year, but I’ve had far, FAR, less time than i thought I would have at the beginning of the year. But I can do train subjects by myself, I’d just like to get a sense from others whether this is something they would like every year.
I probably wouldn’t as I already have most of the rail kits I want now, and my focus is more on armor and softskins anyway. However, I could hold off on starting the BR 52 and go one more round if you get enough takers.
Phil, I’m up for it. Hopefully by next year all of the construction and other things going on will be complete. Contractors told us that the addition that they thought would be complete by late September or October is probably not going to be complete until around Christmas.
I cannot say what exactly my first round of models will be, but I will finally have space for a layout.
By then I plan to resume my role as RRM admin and participate in the site more than I’ve been able to the last year or two.
Phil, I would certainly be up for it. I have several railcars in the stash. Yep, I’d be in!
Mike
I have a couple of military scale train cars, and a lot of track. I’ve been itching it diving into 1/35 Railroad subjects. I’m thinking of ordering the Border or Hobby Boss 88 on the flat car.
I am up for it! I still need to finish two more wagons
Finally got back to the rail car. Spent better than an hour putting the “hitch” on the front. It’s supposed to be adjustable (if you were to attach this car to the back of another) but one half of the hitch’s center pin was not threaded. I had to bore out one of the couplers. Once it’s painted, I doubt it’ll be noticeable. Still, a PITA.
The front’s tools are laid out. Tomorrow I’ll mark where all the PE brackets go and start on that part.
Mike
OK, I created a new campaign for next year.
We’ll be needing a badge for it. We’ll also be needing a badge for this year’s if any of you have skills of that kind…
I created the badge for the first one. And I owe everyone a badge for last year’s, too. I will try to create one.
Mike, where did you get the hitch from? Is it scratch build?
I am planning on making three drasines linked together, but I need something to connect them.
Jesper,
That’s part of the somewhat hard to find ABER set.
It’s shown at the bottom left and very top right. A very inclusive set of PE - two full pages of directions.
Mike
Thanks for the reply. I would need at least two, so I will skip the set. However now I know how the link actually looks, so I will try to scratch build something that looks right.
Thanks for sharing
There are a couple of prolific 3D printers within Kitmaker. I bet one of them would be willing to tackle that task. I’d be more than happy to provide measurements of all the necessary parts for that reason.
Mike
I sat down this morning to abuse my eyes and fingers.
These are the strap holders for the forward set of OVM:
Little PE parts, bent, then a length of tiny wire slid through the holes, super thin CA glue to hold them in place and a paper towel to soak up the excess, and finally a set of nippers to cut the ends off.
And, the forward PE bits installed. I’m really not too worried about a couple of them “turning” a bit on me. Hardly noticeable once the tools are in and I throw some bits on top.
Goody, I have some more for the rear to do.
Mike
I believe (?) I’m done with the PE, unless of course I forgot something like I did on the turret. Ooops.
For whatever reason, the Dunklegrau seems too dark (in the picture and in person). I have several bottles of DG, so I may add some white to one just to lighten it up. You look at what I’ve done and then real vehicles that are DG, and the paint for models always seems to dark (Heritage Foundation just finished a 223 in DG and it’s lighter than this). Maybe it’s just my eyes?
Mike
p.s. I think this one will have the two-color camo done - dunkelgrau and schokobraun (maybe).
It is indeed dark, but it looks a bit lighter in the B&W photos a bit due to lighting effects, aging of the photos, and possibly dust on the vehicle itself lightening the overall appearance. The paint would also gray out a bit under exposure to sunlight over time; pre-shading under a lighter gray can simulate that. I do the dark gray and it is indeed hard to pop out detail but dust generally helps a lot.
Okay, I actually finished the last two rail cars back at the end of June but got deep into some other campaigns and did not post final pics:
The Cyber Hobby 9118 Schwerer Plattformwagen Typ Ssy
The Takom 35A02 Schwerer Plattformwagen Typ SSys (Actually Sabre packed with a Takom Jagdpanther)
Trumpeter 01508 Panzerträgerwagen with Pz.Kpfw 38(t) Ausf. E/F
I still plan on building the ‘continuous’ track so all of my railway vehicles will be linked as a display but after test-fitting and measuring I will have to fine tune my original idea to account for the slight differences between Dragon/Trumpeter and aligning everything.
Here is its current state:
Sweet. How was the Sabre kit to build? I’ve looked at various things they offer but haven’t bought anything yet…
In my library, to paraphrase Crocodile Dundee while looking at my bookcase and then back at the post, “that’s no bookcase. Now that’s a bookcase!”
